Defiant Solari calls for patience
MADRID • Real Madrid coach Santiago Solari said that his team's efforts to rediscover their best form would not be a "path of roses", after the club suffered their heaviest-ever European home defeat on Wednesday.
The Champions League holders crashed to a 3-0 loss to Russia's CSKA Moscow at the Santiago Bernabeu, although they had already qualified as Group G winners before the kick-off.
"I played a team with a lot of young players," said Argentinian Solari, who made seven changes to the team who beat Huesca 1-0 in LaLiga at the weekend.
"The match was used to give many players time who needed it, some because they started and others because they returned from injury, and to give rest to others to try and stay alive in all competitions."
Real had never lost by three goals at home in European competitions before Wednesday's defeat, according to Uefa.com.
The Spanish giants have struggled for much of this campaign after seeing coach Zinedine Zidane and star player Cristiano Ronaldo leave in the close season, with Julen Lopetegui sacked as boss in October.
But, under Solari, Real have enjoyed a revival of sorts with four wins in five games helping them close the gap on LaLiga leaders Barcelona to five points.
"I know it's not a path of roses, and besides, every rose has its thorns," Solari added.
"We don't like this result, we wanted to finish with a victory."
However, CSKA's remarkable victory - their second over Real in this Champions League campaign after a 1-0 home success in October - was not enough to secure them a spot in the Europa League as they were pipped to third place in the group by Viktoria Plzen.
CSKA finished bottom on seven points due to their inferior head-to-head record against Plzen, who beat Roma 2-1 in the other match.
Real remained on 12 points while Roma, who had clinched second place in the group, ended on nine.

Massimiliano Allegri to vacate Juventus hot seat

TURIN • Long-serving coach Massimiliano Allegri will leave Italian Serie A champions Juventus at the end of this season, the club said yesterday.
An official announcement read: "Massimiliano Allegri will not be on the Juventus bench for the 2019-2020 season."
The Italian had held meetings with the club's hierarchy earlier in the week during which a clear disagreement between the two parties emerged.
Juventus have already wrapped up their eighth consecutive league title, and Allegri's fifth in as many years since replacing Antonio Conte in 2014.
But, despite signing Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid for a club-record fee of €100 million (S$153.7 million) last summer, the Bianconeri failed to make it past the last eight of the Champions League for the second straight year.
They were humiliated by modest-spending Ajax in the quarter-finals of the competition last month to extend their 23-year European Cup drought.
Allegri guided Juventus to two European finals - losing to Barcelona in 2015 before getting hammered by Real Madrid two years later.
Club president Andrea Agnelli will hold a press conference today.
According to Italian daily Tuttosport, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is Juventus' No. 1 target to replace the outgoing coach.

Treat women better, Salah urges Muslim world
LOS ANGELES • Egyptian football star Mohamed Salah has called for change in the way women are treated in the Muslim world in an interview with Time magazine published on Wednesday.
The Liverpool forward was named one of the US magazine's 100 most influential figures of the year, alongside other athletes including Tiger Woods, LeBron James and Naomi Osaka.
Salah, 26, told Time that while his attitude towards gender equality had evolved over the years, he wanted to see more change.
"I think we need to change the way we treat women in our culture," he was quoted as saying. "It's not optional."
He said the treatment of women "in my culture and in the Middle East" had changed his opinions on gender issues.
"I support the woman more than I did before, because I feel like she deserves more than what they give her at the moment," he added.
Salah is an icon in Egypt after helping the country qualify for the 2018 World Cup, the first time they had reached the Finals of the event since 1990.
He was named African Footballer of the Year in 2017 and last year and was also English football's Player of the Year last year following a dazzling season with Liverpool.
He told Time he has learnt to cope with the "little bit of pressure" that comes with his elevated profile, while expressing pride at being regarded as a role model.
"To be the first Egyptian in (this) situation and no one has done this before... It's something different," he said, insisting that superstardom had not changed his lifestyle.
"I just live my life normal," he said. "Most of the time I stay at home, I don't like to go out."

SINGAPORE PREMIER LEAGUE

Tampines Rovers v Hougang United Our Tampines Hub, tomorrow, 5.30pm
What a difference two months can make. On March 3, Tampines Rovers and Hougang United lined up in a lip-smacking opener to the Singapore Premier League (SPL) season, touted as a clash between potential title rivals.
But Tampines put paid to notions of an even contest, trotting off the Jalan Besar Stadium pitch with a handsome 5-1 win, aided by a red card to Hougang's Justin Hui that preceded the Stags' four second-half goals.
Since then, however, the two teams have had contrasting fortunes in the league.
Hougang have won five of their seven games and currently sit in second. Tampines, meanwhile, have not won any of their last four and are fourth in the nine-team SPL.
As the teams prepare to meet again tomorrow at Our Tampines Hub, Hougang are eager to prove that the first result between the two sides this season was a one-off.
"We all know Tampines are a good team, there's no denying that," said star attacker Faris Ramli, who has scored six SPL goals this season.
"But we all know the 5-1 scoreline did not reflect the game. We suffered a red card at 1-0 down and they made use of the extra player to score more.
"The fact we managed to equalise (to 1-1) with 10 men shows we have the quality to match them."
Tampines coach Gavin Lee was also keen to downplay the thrashing his side handed out.
"In terms of whether the scoreline reflected the quality of both teams, I think it didn't," said Lee.
"Both sides have good sets of players but, on that day and in that game, we were the better team and they didn't perform. When those two factors come together, that (big win) can happen.
"Are we expecting a similar scoreline on Sunday? No. They'll definitely be fired up to prove the previous result was a fluke."

On Tampines' recent struggles in the league, Lee said the team's exertions in the AFC Cup - games usually take place in midweek - have affected their consistency. Most recently, the Stags needed a last-minute goal to beat Myanmar champions Yangon United at Jalan Besar on Wednesday.
The 28-year-old acknowledged that the continental competition is "not easy physically" on his players as the matches are played at "an international tempo".
Lee added: "We've spoken about it as a team and we know it's part of the privilege of playing in a continental tournament... Whether (fatigue) will play a big part tomorrow, I don't know.
"But we've done our usual recovery protocols and hope the players are fresh, and physically and tactically ready."
Despite their good run of form, Hougang are looking to avoid a second loss on the trot, following their gutwrenching 3-2 defeat in injury time by league leaders Brunei DPMM last Sunday. The Cheetahs had led 2-1, and a win would have taken them top of the SPL.
"The loss was a bitter pill to swallow, but we've addressed it as a team and we are in better spirits now," said Faris. "This season, we have shown we have the mental strength to bounce back from our two (previous) losses by winning the next game both times, and we will have to do it again.

PAYBACK TIME
We have shown we are capable of competing at the top of the SPL, so this is a game we definitely want to take three points from.
FARIS RAMLI, Hougang winger, believes beating Tampines can underline his side's championship credentials.

"We have shown we are capable of competing at the top of the SPL, so this is a game we definitely want to take three points from."
