Football: Madrid title hopes hanging by thread after shock loss to Real Sociedad

MADRID (AFP) - Real Madrid may not even challenge for the title let alone win it as a shock 2-0 defeat at home to Real Sociedad on Sunday (Jan 6) left them even further adrift in La Liga.
Barcelona, already seven points clear, could extend the gap over their fiercest rivals to 10 by beating Getafe later, while Atletico Madrid and Sevilla eached gained on on the European champions, despite playing out a 1-1 draw against each other.
Madrid were reduced to 10 men in the second half after Lucas Vazquez was shown a second yellow card but by then they already trailed to Willian Jose's early penalty.
Ruben Pardo wrapped up a brilliant victory for La Real, who had beaten Madrid only once in their last 22 meetings. This was their first victory at the Santiago Bernabeu since 2004.
For Santiago Solari, the honeymoon period he enjoyed in November after replacing Julen Lopetegui is well and truly over.
This loss, combined with the draw away to Villarreal on Wednesday, means Madrid sit fifth, outside even the Champions League places.
The attendance of 53,412 was the club's second lowest of the season too.
Barcelona have won seven out of the last 10 La Liga titles and if they are to slip up in 2019, it would now seem Atletico or Sevilla will be the ones to take advantage.
Gareth Bale was missing with a calf injury but it was the 18-year-old Vinicius Junior that came in, not Isco, who is yet to start a league game under Solari.
La Real's penalty was awarded after 75 seconds and converted after 150. Mikel Merino ghosted past Sergio Ramos and inside Marcelo.
Casemiro tried to cover but only bundled Merino to the ground. Willian Jose went high and down the middle.
La Real might have had a second soon after had the excellent Mikel Oyarzabal spotted Adnan Januzaj unmarked in the middle.
Instead, Madrid poured forward, only to spurn a handful of chances before the break. Karim Benzema had the best of them, lashing wide with only Geronimo Rulli to beat after Vinicius' delicate touch.
Rulli was not needed then but he would be, many times. He denied Vinicius, Benzema and Luka Modric in quick succession. Ramos wanted a penalty for a push in his back but the appeal was desperate.
Vazquez clipped the post with a looping cross but that was not enough to hush the angry whistles at the end of the half.
The second period was frantic, with chances at both ends. Vinicius and Raphael Varane, twice, failed to find a gap in a goalmouth scramble, while Vinicius played a neat one-two with Benzema but his shot sailed inches wide.
La Real could have sealed it too as Oyarzabal fired over from close range and the weaving Januzaj twice went close.
Isco replaced Casemiro in the 57th minute and in the 61st Vazquez was sent off. A rash sliding challenge had earned him a yellow card towards the end of the first half and even if the clip at Merino's heels seemed harmless, he was foolish to take the risk.
Down to 10, Madrid still pushed and had a more convincing penaty appeal when Vinicius tumbled over the arm of Rulli. Referee Jose Munuera stood firm.
Januzaj should have wrapped it up when his shot was saved by the legs of Thibaut Courtois. Pardo did, by heading in a cross from Willian Jose, who could have made it three but shot high in injury time. Madrid were well beaten.

Football: Son contemplated Tottenham exit until discussion with Pochettino

LONDON (REUTERS) - Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min wanted a transfer back to Germany after struggling in his debut season at the Premier League club but stayed put after a conversation with manager Mauricio Pochettino, the South Korea international has said.
Son moved to Tottenham from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015 and scored only four times in 28 league matches but he has since turned his fortunes around and looks set to have his best season in a Spurs shirt with 11 league goals in 22 games so far.
"I came close to leaving. I went to the gaffer's office and told him I didn't feel comfortable and wanted to leave for Germany," Son told Standard Sport in an interview.
"The gaffer trusted me and I am so grateful. He made my dream come true. I am more than grateful (to him).
"It's difficult to say. I have worked four years with the gaffer, it's just amazing."
With Harry Kane and Dele Alli both sidelined due to injuries during crucial periods this season, Son has stepped up and helped Spurs keep a firm grip on third spot in the league.
His fine form has come even with having to leave Tottenham twice for international duty, first for the Asian Games in August and then for the Asian Cup in January.

"Today, patience in football is difficult but always it's about time. You can learn a lot from these difficult moments," Pochettino said.
"The conversation (with Son) was not only professional, it was human. Sonny was patient. He was happy with the decision and now we are seeing his best form.
"People love him, team mates, fans. It's very easy to work with him. He's very professional... a happy boy that translates that energy to the team."

Football: Substitute Ronaldo saves 10-man Juve's unbeaten record

MILAN (REUTERS) - Cristiano Ronaldo saved Juventus' unbeaten Serie A record this season when he came off the bench to score the equaliser in a dramatic 2-2 draw at Atalanta on Wednesday (Dec 26).
Juve, who dropped their first away points of the season, were down to 10 men at one of Serie A's toughest venues when Ronaldo nodded home from close range in the 78th minute.
The Turin side thought they had snatched a win when Leonardo Bonucci volleyed home from a free kick in stoppage time but it was ruled out for offside.
Juventus, with 16 wins and two draws from 18 games, have 50 points, nine ahead of Napoli who travel to Inter Milan later on Wednesday. Atalanta are eighth with 25 points.
"We knew we were in for a battle today. We did well to stay in the game after going down to 10 men," said Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri.
"We could have won it at the end but it's still a good result against an excellent side."
Atalanta defender Berat Djimsiti miscued and sent an innocuous Alex Sandro cross into his own net to put Juventus ahead in the second minute before two goals from Duvan Zapata turned the game around.
The Colombian, scorer of Atalanta's last eight goals, collected Alejandro Gomez's pass with his back to goal and turned easily past Bonucci before firing a low shot past Wojciech Szczesny in the 24th minute.
Juventus midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off for a second bookable offence in the 53rd minute and Zapata headed Atalanta in front from a corner three minutes later.
Ronaldo, left out of the starting line-up for a Serie A game for the first time since his move from Real Madrid, came to the rescue with his 12th league goal of the season.
A corner was floated to the far post, Mario Mandzukic headed it back into the middle and Ronaldo nodded home.
Allegri apologised for his angry reaction on the touchline to Bentancur's dismissal.
"I got a bit angry today and I'm sorry about that but we should be setting an example for the fans," he said.
"If we want to improve things in Italy, we need to improve our football culture."

Football: Real Madrid frustrated by Villarreal as Cazorla strikes twice

VILA-REAL, SPAIN (REUTERS) - Real Madrid endured a frustrating start to the new year as they drew 2-2 at struggling Villarreal on Thursday (Jan 3) and were left seven points behind La Liga leaders Barcelona.
Midfielder Santi Cazorla gave the home side the lead in the fourth minute of the game, which was rescheduled due to Real's participation in last month's Club World Cup, by bending a wonderful shot into the bottom corner.
But the European champions struck back three minutes later with a headed goal from Karim Benzema after a sweeping attacking move.
Raphael Varane gave the visitors the lead in the 20th with a header from a free kick but it was former Arsenal midfielder Cazorla, who has overcome a terrible run of injuries to resurrect his career in Spain, who had the final say.
The diminutive 34-year-old Spaniard ghosted into the box undetected to nod home at the back post in the 82nd minute and give his side a deserved point in new coach Luis Garcia Plaza's first home game in charge.
Real have not won their opening away game of a new year since 2014, and Cazorla's late strike prevented them from going level on points with Sevilla and kept them in fourth place, seven behind leaders Barcelona after 17 games.
Apart from conceding the early goal, Real produced an impressive display in the first half but lost their grip on the game after Gareth Bale was substituted soon after the interval with a knock.
Ballon d'Or winner Luka Modric, who helped set up the equaliser, followed Bale off the pitch midway through the second half and Villarreal, spurred on by their supporters, showed more intensity and wrestled back control of the play.
Cazorla's leveller followed a spell of pressure from the home side but Real could still have snatched a winner when substitute Isco burst into the area but was denied by Villarreal goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo.
"It could be said the result was fair, we chased the victory and had it in our hands, we wanted to kill the game off and they put us under a lot of pressure as they were at home and they badly needed the points," Real coach Santiago Solari said.
"When Gareth came off we lost a bit of sharpness in attack, we still had the chance to score a couple but we needed to attack with more clarity." Villarreal, who have reached the last 32 of the Europa League despite a dire domestic season, clawed their way out of the relegation zone to 17th in the standings, level on points with 18th-placed Athletic Bilbao.
"This result will give us strength," said Villarreal coach Garcia, who has taken two points from two games since succeeding the sacked Javi Calleja.
"I imagine that every game from now on will be a battle, a war to survive but hopefully we'll come through it, and this point gives us a big emotional boost."

Football: Cardiff keep up the fight with win over Hammers

(REUTERS) - Relegation-threatened Cardiff City earned three vital points with a 2-0 win over West Ham on Saturday (March 9), moving them within two points of 17th placed Burnley.
Cardiff got off to a flying start, taking the lead in the fourth minute when Spaniard Victor Camarasa broke from midfield and fed Joseph Murphy whose low cross from the right was turned in at the near post by Junior Hoilett.
Neil Warnock's side, who have just Fulham and Huddersfield below them, had plenty of opportunities to extend their lead in the first half against an out-of-sorts West Ham but went in at the break with just a single goal advantage.
The Hammers, who had 70 per cent possession, brought on Marko Arnautovic for a below-par Felipe Anderson at the interval as Manuel Pellegrini looked to add some life to his attack.
But seven minutes after the restart the decisive second came when Hoilett got past Ryan Fredericks and his cross was headed back across goal by Josh Murphy for Camarasa to turn it on from close range.
All West Ham had to show for their possession was a long range effort from midfielder Declan Rice which struck the Cardiff post.
The defeat was the fifth in the last six away games for West Ham who sit in ninth place.
"If I'm honest, they fully deserved it - we weren't good enough today," said Hammers defender Aaron Cresswell.
"We didn't start well and the crowd were up for it. We knew it would be tough and it certainly was today," he added.
Cardiff, in 18th spot, move to 28 points while Burnley, on 30 points, face Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.
Midfielder Harry Arter said the team's work-rate and spirit had driven them to victory.
"We outworked them and we had a lot of quality on the ball. We raised our level of performance today. We put things right on the pitch after a hard week in training," he said.
"Everything we've done this season has been fighting until the end until the last three games. It's always been a united dressing room. There's been no rift in this squad."
