Jubilant Liverpool keen to keep Klopp beyond 2022

Jubilant Liverpool keen to keep Klopp beyond 2022

LONDON • Liverpool fans perched on rooftops, speed cameras and bus shelters on Sunday afternoon. Others clambered up lamp posts and sat astride traffic lights.
The open-top bus transporting Jurgen Klopp's squad was reduced to a crawl by the number of fans turning out to celebrate their sixth Champions League/European Cup triumph.
By the time it reached its destination, almost four hours had passed, and Merseyside police estimated that up to 750,000 people had lined the streets.
The sight of families, young and old, standing shoulder to shoulder was a vision to behold and highlighted how the supporters have been unified behind an institution that was idling before Klopp's arrival in October 2015.
And that is why the club's owner, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), wants him to oversee the construction of a dynasty at Anfield by staying on as the manager beyond the three years remaining on his annual £7 million (S$12.1 million) contract.
The German spent seven years each in his previous positions with Mainz and Borussia Dortmund, but FSG feels he can break new ground.
There is a belief that a young squad are primed to challenge consistently for the top honours under Klopp - who received the loudest cheers as he hoisted the trophy into the air - so the club's hierarchy is keen to tie him down.
Liverpool also want to ward off rival interest, with Bayern Munich great Franz Beckenbauer telling German daily Bild yesterday the 51-year-old was "one of the best coaches in the world" and would be a "good fit" at the Allianz Arena.
Reds chairman Tom Werner said: "When the players threw Jurgen in the air after our victory, they were acknowledging what all Liverpool fans know - he is beloved by all who appreciate football.
"Jurgen is a brilliant coach, but just as importantly, he is a humble and caring man."
Of the turnout for their 12.8km victory parade, Klopp joked: "I don't know exactly how many people live in Liverpool but it does not look like there is a lot (of) space for fans of other clubs.
"It is incredible. If you are a young kid, which do you support?
"There are not a lot of opportunities or options other than Liverpool.
"You see in the eyes how much it means. It is really intense."

Football: Schar double earns Newcastle crucial 3-0 win over Cardiff

NEWCASTLE, England (REUTERS) - Newcastle United moved out of the relegation zone and dropped Cardiff City into it as an unlikely double by Fabian Schar earned them a crucial 3-0 victory at St James' Park on Saturday (Jan 19).
An afternoon that began with unpopular club owner Mike Ashley being booed by disgruntled home fans ended on a brighter note as Rafa Benitez's side took maximum points at home for only the third time this season.
After five games without a league win the visit of Cardiff had the feel of a key relegation battle and Schar's 24th-minute opener eased the tension around the ground.
Finding himself in an advanced position the Swiss international centre back drove in from near the touchline and with no pressure from Cardiff's defenders took aim and curled a superb shot past keeper Neil Etheridge.
It was Schar's first goal for Newcastle since joining from Spanish club Deportivo La Coruna and having got the taste for it he doubled his side's lead when bundling the ball into the net from a Matt Ritchie corner just past the hour mark.
Schar became the first Newcastle defender to score two goals in a game since Philippe Albert in 1996.
Cardiff offered little in response apart from the odd flurry and Schar was not far away from claiming a hat-trick when he headed off target from another Ritchie corner.
Ayoze Perez added some late gloss, tapping in Newcastle's third in stoppage time from Salomon Rondon's cross.
Newcastle climbed to 17th with 21 points, one place above the drop zone while Cardiff are in 18th spot, with 19 points.
"We did good. We scored three goals so everyone has to be happy," Benitez said.
"The main thing is the commitment of the players and then it was about trying to manage the game against a tough team, a physical team."

'Electric' Sterling has boss purring

LONDON • When Raheem Sterling grew up within the shadow of Wembley, he would ride around on his bike marvelling at the gleaming stadium, dreaming of playing there.
He even has a tattoo of him as a young boy staring up in awe at the arch. Life now imitates artwork and Wembley now marvels at him.
The 24-year-old scored not one but three goals in the 5-0 demolition of the Czech Republic on Friday - the first England player to notch a hat-trick at the national stadium since Jermain Defoe against Bulgaria in 2010.
It was the perfect exhibition of Sterling's myriad talents and gave England the ideal start in qualifying for Euro 2020.
Perhaps most encouragingly of all, is evidence that he is finally transferring his Manchester City form onto the international stage.
England manager Gareth Southgate praised the forward's "devastating" performance and the manner in which he has turned around his international career, after going three years and 27 appearances without a goal.

  • 5

  • Goals Raheem Sterling has scored in his last three games for England. He had not managed a single goal in his previous 27 appearances.

"Raheem was brilliant, electric all night," Southgate said.
"He's in a really confident moment, not only on the field but off the field he's so mature and comfortable in himself.
"So I'm delighted for him to get the reaction that he did from the crowd. We can't hide from the fact he's had difficult moments with England and he's turned that full circle.
"The goals in Spain (two goals in a Nations League win in October) were an important moment for him; you could see the release that had brought. He's hungry for those goals and I thought he was devastating tonight."
Sterling's efficiency on the pitch was so good that he had 96 per cent passing accuracy, and his three shots brought all three goals alongside a Harry Kane penalty - which he won - and a Tomas Kalas own goal.
But it was not simply his pace and persistence that opened up the Czechs time and again. It was the intelligence that defined his involvement, his awareness of opportunity and ruthlessness in exploiting chances, shredding the visitors' defence.
His latest performance was just another reminder why Southgate believes it is between Sterling or Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk to win the individual awards as the Premier League's outstanding player this season.
Not that Sterling was the only player in England's colours to excel, though.
The Three Lions finished the night with Jadon Sancho and Callum Hudson-Odoi, making his debut as a second-half substitute, with both 18-year-olds menacing their opponents from the wings.
Declan Rice, who switched allegiance from Ireland only earlier this month, also earned his first international cap in the second half.
"To finish with two young wingers was really exciting," added Southgate.
"They don't feel inhibited around the camp, so they don't feel inhibited on the pitch and you could see that by the way they played.
"I thought Jadon made a really good contribution for the first goal. Callum had an opportunity to play with the freedom he's shown all week, and I thought he displayed that."
England, following an impressive semi-final run at last year's World Cup, are indeed looking promising with this young side.
When the Mexican wave started at Wembley it was not one of those occasions when it felt as if the crowd were trying to make their own entertainment.
They were well and truly entertained, and will be looking for more of the same kind of performance from Sterling and Co when England travel to Montenegro for their second qualifier tomorrow.

Football: Man United open talks with Rashford over new deal, reports say

LONDON (AFP) - Manchester United have opened talks with Marcus Rashford over a new and improved contract following the forward's impressive run of form under caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, reports said on Tuesday (Feb 5).
The 21-year-old scored his 10th goal of the season in Sunday's 1-0 win at Leicester, becoming the second-youngest player to reach 100 Premier League appearances for United after Ryan Giggs.
Rashford's contract expires next year and while United have the option to extend it until 2021, negotiations are understood to have started over a fresh agreement.
Rashford has started all eight Premier League games since Solskjaer took over from the sacked Jose Mourinho in December, scoring six goals.
The club are also working on a new contract for goalkeeper David de Gea, having last week tied forward Anthony Martial down until at least 2024.
United interim boss Solskjaer said on Friday that Martial and Rashford could create a devastating on-field relationship for years to come.
"They'll play many, many years together, hopefully, so if they get an understanding of each other, because both are very good at coming in off the left," he said.
"If one of them plays centrally, then the other one has to have opposite movements."
Seven wins in eight league games under Solskjaer have lifted United to just two points behind fourth-placed Chelsea in the race for Champions League places.

AIRMARINE CUP

Singapore 1
(Oman win 5-4 on penalties)

His tenure may had lasted only two matches but, in his short time in charge, Nazri Nasir had made his mark as the Singapore national team's caretaker coach.
Armed with a clear plan for attacking football, unshakeable belief in his men and inspiring team talks, the Lions (world ranking 165) punched above their weight and took Oman (world ranking 90) to penalties in last night's AirMarine Cup final in Kuala Lumpur.
They drew 1-1 in regulation time before losing 5-4 on penalties.
"I am so proud of the boys," he told The Sunday Times after the game, which saw goalkeeper Izwan Mahbud (swollen foot) rested and captain Hariss Harun (groin strain) start the game on the bench.
"There is nothing else I can ask for from them. They showed true character. At half-time (with Singapore trailing 1-0), I told them there are 45 minutes more. They can go out fighting or they can go out. They have nothing to lose. And looking at their reactions, I got the feeling that we will equalise."
The Omanis struck first at the Bukit Jalil Stadium in the 28th minute through Aziz Al Maqbali's header from midfielder Raed Saleh's cross.
But in the last minute of stoppage time, substitute striker Khairul Nizam was brought down outside the box and earned a free kick.
Several Lions crammed into Oman's wall to make space for Zulfahmi Arifin to place the ball into the top corner for his first international goal.
"Zul just picked his spot, he has a very natural left foot," said Nazri in praising the Hougang United midfielder.
However, with no extra-time in this friendly tournament, it was straight to penalties. There, Safuwan Baharudin, Yasir Hanapi, Amirul Adli and Hariss all netted but Faris Ramli, Singapore's fourth taker, crashed his effort against the bar while Erwin Koeman's men all converted.
The Lions reached the final after beating hosts Malaysia 1-0 on Wednesday while Oman thrashed Afghanistan 5-0.
In the day's earlier game, Malaysia defeated Afghanistan 2-1 to finish third in the quadrangular tournament.
And with the Football Association of Singapore set to announce its new national coach in June, Nazri hopes the new trainer can keep faith in the current lot.
He said: "Man-management is very important in football. If you can win the hearts of the players, you are easily one-up.
"I told the players - win or lose, I believe in you and I will take the blame.
"These boys fought all the way for me, they gave me 100 per cent."

Football: Huddersfield end losing run with 0-0 draw at Cardiff

CARDIFF, Wales (REUTERS) - Bottom club Huddersfield Town ended their eight-match losing streak in the Premier League with a goalless draw at fellow strugglers Cardiff City on Saturday (Jan 12) but were left fuming over a decision by referee Lee Mason.
Cardiff, in 17th place, did not manage a shot on target and Huddersfield will feel they should have picked up a rare win in South Wales.
The controversy came when Mason pointed to the spot after Florent Hadergjonaj went down under challenge from Joe Bennett, but changed his mind after consulting his assistant.
Huddersfield manager David Wagner said he had been unable to comprehend the explanation given to him by the assistant referee for the change of decision.
"There are four people in black and you have to ask them what was going on," said the German.
"I spoke to the linesman during the match and he said: 'The first incident was not a foul and the second I don't know,' but I don't know what he means. It was clearly a penalty, the video footage speaks for itself and we have not got it. It makes no sense to waste my energy for something like this, but it was a big mistake."
Wagner said the decision could prove to be very costly for the struggling Yorkshire club.
"I really can't find the words how this can happen. The fourth official had no idea either, he was as surprised as everyone else was. Decisions like this make tables and seasons. We have had so many decisions against us and I don't know why," he said.
"The boys left everything on the grass, and only one team deserved something out of the game. One point is not enough, we needed to win."
Huddersfield, who had lost their previous six games at Cardiff in all competitions, had 61 per cent of possession and Jason Puncheon and Steve Mounie both went close to a breakthrough.
Wagner's side remain bottom on 11 points, eight points away from safety.
Cardiff captain Sean Morrison said his team did not produce enough for a victory.
"We wanted to take three points but with our performance we didn't deserve to win the game and we're disappointed.
"We've got better players than we have shown today and if we want to stay in the Premier League our performances need to be better and we need to create chances."

Football: Manchester City keep up pressure on Reds

Football: Manchester City keep up pressure on Reds

LONDON • For a team with Manchester City's ambitions, Huddersfield were obliging opponents.
Pep Guardiola's team duly took advantage of a side whose toes seem tagged for the relegation morgue and, in the process, renewed their threat in the Premier League title race after a comfortable 3-0 away victory yesterday.
The gap at the top of the table is back to four points and the message for Liverpool is loud and clear - it is going to be a heck of a job to shake City off.
Not that this was the most devastating performance the league champions will deliver this season.
Indeed, they might reflect it was a missed opportunity to add even more sheen to their goal difference.
Yet it is difficult to be too critical when the truth was Guardiola's men could win with something to spare despite a performance, by their high standards, that seldom got above six out of 10.
Since Liverpool's Roberto Firmino became the last player to score against them on Jan 3, City have now scored 23 times in all competitions without a single one coming back the other way.

NOTHING MORE THAN WE DESERVED
The way we played we didn't deserve more than three goals. We will improve in the future. We have to demand more from ourselves in every game and do our best.
PEP GUARDIOLA, Man City manager, on a relentless drive to better his side.

It works out at a goal, on average, every 17 minutes and, if anything, it was probably a surprise they did not add more goals against a Huddersfield side put together by caretaker manager Mark Hudson.
City were also denied a clear penalty when referee Andre Marriner missed Terence Kongolo's foul on Raheem Sterling and, to Guardiola's irritation, they might have allowed a touch of complacency to creep in once Danilo got lucky for the opening goal. Christopher Schindler inadvertently diverted the City defender's shot into his own net for their opener.
Maybe it was too straightforward for the away side. Too easy, even. Perhaps it was a direct consequence of neither David Silva nor Bernardo Silva starting the match.
Yet City did have Kevin de Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan at the John Smith's Stadium-and it would have been reasonable to think Sergio Aguero's focus might have been sharpened by the fact he had been chosen ahead of Gabriel Jesus, the scorer of seven goals in his last three matches.
Whatever the reason, it was certainly unusual to see the reigning champions take the lead, then drop their tempo rather than pour forward again, in the way that is expected of such a team.
Guardiola, one imagines, had a thing or two to say about it at half-time and City quickly put that right after the break, with goals from Sterling (54th minute) and Leroy Sane (56th) to wrap up the contest.
The scorers admitted that Guardiola had given his team an earful at the break for not going for the Terriers' jugular, with Sane revealing he "woke us up a little bit at half-time".
The German said: "We played quicker in the second half and were better positionally.
"He always tries to give us the solution, what we can do better, and he did it again."
And there can certainly be no slackening of standards with the Reds stretching their unbeaten home league run to 32 games after beating Crystal Palace 4-3 on Saturday.
Jurgen Klopp's men, in the process, set a club record of 60 league points from 23 matches, topping their previous best tally by one, and the German praised his side, calling the mark "crazy".
