Football: Spurs stunned as Burnley ruin Kane's return

BURNLEY, United Kingdom (AFP) - Tottenham's Premier League title challenge suffered a crushing blow as Ashley Barnes' late strike sealed a shock 2-1 win for Burnley that ruined Harry Kane's goal-scoring return on Saturday (Feb 23).
Mauricio Pochettino's side would have moved within two points of leaders Manchester City with a win at Turf Moor.
But they squandered the chance to enhance their title prospects with a sloppy display that saw Chris Wood put Burnley ahead after half-time.
There was controversy about Wood's goal as it came from a corner that Tottenham felt shouldn't have been given.
But Pochettino's men had a break of their own when Kane, back after missing seven games with an ankle injury, capitalised on a throw-in that was taken in the wrong place.
At that stage, Tottenham looked poised to push on for a fifth successive league victory.
However, they paid the price for sloppy defending as Barnes struck with seven minutes left to extend Burnley's unbeaten league run to eight matches.

It was a bitter blow for third placed Tottenham, who will be eight points off top spot if second placed Liverpool, currently level on points with City, win at Manchester United on Sunday.
Pochettino was fuming at full-time, confronting referee Mike Dean and his assistants on the pitch in a lengthy rant that showed his frustration at both Burnley's first goal and Tottenham's missed opportunity.
Playing for the first time in 10 days due to their early exit from the FA Cup, Tottenham were back in action after beating Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League in their previous match.
Pochettino knew his team had no margin for error if they wanted to stayed in contention and, as games against Chelsea and Arsenal loom next week, he billed the trip to Turf Moor as a "final".
With England manager Gareth Southgate watching from the stands, Kane came close to marking his return in style when he fired narrowly wide from the edge of the area.
But Tottenham were struggling to build the head of steam required to break down the well-marshalled Clarets' rearguard.

POCHETTINO PROTESTS

Kane, back to fitness ahead of schedule, grew more menacing as he shook off the rust and early in the second half the striker drew a superb tip-over from Tom Heaton when he let fly from 25 yards.
Moments later, Pochettino was fuming on the touchline as Burnley snatched the lead with Wood's seventh goal in his last 10 games in the 57th minute.
When Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen slid in to challenge Jeff Hendrick, a corner was given to Burnley even though the ball appeared to come off the Clarets man last.
From Ashley Westwood's corner, Tottenham went to sleep as Wood timed his run to climb above the statuesque Juan Foyth and Toby Alderweireld.
The New Zealand striker's powerful header hit the crossbar and bounced over the line before Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris could react.
Pochettino complained bitterly to the fourth official, but the Argentine's protests were quelled as Tottenham grabbed a controversial goal of their own eight minutes later.
Danny Rose took a Tottenham throw from several yards further forward than the spot the ball went out, and his delivery sent Kane racing clear on goal.
Kane showed he had lost none of his predatory instincts as he held off Ben Mee and slotted a cool finish past Heaton for his 21st goal of the season and his first since early January.
Tottenham had stolen late winners in three of their last four league games, but it was Burnley who finished in the ascendency in the 83rd minute.
Johann Berg Gudmundsson seized possession in midfield and drove into the Tottenham area unchecked by the slow-to-react visitors.
Gudmundsson smashed a cross-shot towards the far post and, with Vertonghen unable to clear, Barnes had the simple task of tapping into the empty net.

Klopp sees no need to panic

LONDON • Liverpool have lost their two games this year but manager Jurgen Klopp believes there is no reason to panic, with his side still four points ahead at the top of the Premier League.
The Reds lost 2-1 to second-placed Manchester City, who are on 50 points, before they lost to Wolves by the same scoreline on Monday in the FA Cup third round.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference ahead of today's league trip to Brighton, Klopp said: "So far our season has been really good and now we need to carry on.
"Two weeks ago everyone was so excited about the distance between (us and City). Now we have lost two games, not nice but not a real problem."
Criticism of his decision to make nine changes for Wolves is still fresh in his ears, as the Reds have now been eliminated from both domestic Cup competitions at the first hurdle. But that will be a small price to pay should they land a first league title since 1990.
When asked if there is an advantage now that they can fully focus on the league, Klopp said: "It's my preferred rhythm (having just one domestic game a week).
"It's our situation, it's not that we decided to go out of the Cups. We had to make changes (and play second-string players) because of the intensity of the games."

He called Brighton a good team, adding: "(Lewis) Dunk and (Shane) Duffy are outstanding centre-halves. (Davy) Propper is playing his best season in England and is a good pairing with (Dale) Stephens."
After that, they have another three very winnable home games against Leicester, Crystal Palace and Bournemouth plus a trip to West Ham before facing Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
Those five games provide them with a perfect platform to at least consolidate their lead, after the disappointment of losing their unbeaten league record to City to give the champions a foothold back in the title race.
Klopp will recall most of his key players who skipped FA Cup duty, but an injury to Dejan Lovren leaves him short of options at centre-back with Joe Gomez and Joel Matip also sidelined. Fabinho may have to deputise in defence once more alongside the calming presence of Virgil van Dijk.
Brighton, with 26 points, are well-placed to achieve their principal target of avoiding relegation with a 10-point cushion above the drop zone, thanks in large part to a strong home record.
Only Tottenham and Chelsea have been victorious in 10 league games at the Amex Stadium. But Brighton manager Chris Hughton knows he has a tough task.
"I think he (Klopp) has been outstanding. This season shows what a great job he's done. Liverpool are better prepared and it's all led by him," he said.

Football: Iran's main stadium to host women's national team, says association's head

TEHERAN (AFP) - Iran's largest stadium will host the women's national football team for the first time since the Islamic revolution, the semi-official news agency ISNA reported on Sunday (Dec 30).
The team will face Russia at Teheran's Azadi Stadium in a friendly match as part of the run-up to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, football federation chief Mehdi Taj told ISNA.
Only female spectators will be allowed to attend, though no date has yet been fixed for the match.
Women were barred from attending matches after the 1979 Islamic revolution, with clerics arguing they must be protected from the masculine atmosphere and sight of semi-clad men.
They have also worried about inadvertent touching as dense crowds of men and women leave stadiums.
There has been some relatively loosening of the rules in recent months, with a select group of around 850 women allowed to attend the the Asian Champions League final between Iran's Persepolis and Japan's Kashima Antlers in November.
The women were seated in a separate stand and entered two hours before the game to avoid the crush.

Some women were also allowed to watch screenings of Iran's World Cup matches at Azadi (which means "freedom") in June.
The first time women attended a post-revolution football match is believed to be November 2001, when around 20 Irish women were among the crowd for an Iran-Ireland World Cup qualifier.
Iranian women had to wait four more years, until June 8, 2005 when a few dozen were allowed to watch an Iran-Bahrain match, also a World Cup qualifier.
There have been other rare occasions when women were allowed to watch matches, but the issue continues to sharply divide the authorities.
After women attended an Iran-Bolivia friendly in October, the prosecutor general warned it would not happen again, saying it would "lead to sin".

'We can score at Barca'

'We can score at Barca'

LONDON • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer knows all about improbable Champions League comebacks.
It was 20 years ago in Barcelona, where he scored the late winner against Bayern Munich after Teddy Sheringham had equalised just moments before, to give Manchester United a second European Cup.
Next Tuesday, at the same ground where Barcelona are unbeaten in their last 30 Champions League games since 2013, the manager believes United can summon that 1999 spirit to knock out the Catalans, who lead their quarter-final 1-0 thanks to Luke Shaw's 12th-minute own goal on Wednesday.
"We've scored goals at the Nou Camp before from corners and crosses," said Solskjaer, who suffered his fourth defeat in five matches since masterminding a miraculous comeback against Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16.
Last month, United became the first team to overcome a 2-0 first-leg home deficit and their 3-1 win in Paris gives the Red Devils "hope and belief we can do it".
Solskjaer added: "But we know we are playing against probably the tournament favourites and going to the Nou Camp will be a challenge.
"It will be a bigger achievement winning that one because with the history of Barcelona, they are not used to losing at home, but we can do it."
United can hope but, in their hearts, they must know that Barca are not PSG and, unless they can find a way to seeing more of the ball and using it to greater effect, they could end up with what they handed out to Lionel Messi: a bloodied nose.
With Messi looking mortal for a change, Barcelona were far from their best, but they still secured the win after Luis Suarez's far post header from the Argentinian's pass deflected in off Shaw and was confirmed by the video assistant referee after initially being given offside.
United defender Chris Smalling had said "bring it on" at the prospect of facing Messi on the eve of the game. And he left the 31-year-old bloodied from the nose as he careered into an aerial challenge on the half-hour mark.
United had excellent performers, with youngster Scott McTominay delivering a performance of real maturity, but Solskjaer simply cannot be happy with a quarter-final home leg that did not feature a single attempt on target.

It is the first time Manchester United have failed to have a single shot on target in a Champions League game since March 2005, in a 1-0 loss at AC Milan.

Luke Shaw's own goal was the eighth United have scored in the Champions League. No team have conceded more in the history of the competition.

Barca manager Ernesto Valverde is not taking anything for granted and said the tie is still finely poised.
"It leaves a good taste in the mouth to win here, but we know it is not a big enough lead given what happened (with PSG) in the last round," said the Spaniard.
United midfielder Paul Pogba said it is possible to win if they can be "killers in front of goal".
"We saw a team we can beat. If you don't believe that, then you just let them go through," he said.
"We believe we can beat them. They are Barcelona, but we are Manchester United... We have to avoid giving them chances and be killers in front of goal.
"We have to keep believing. It is a Champions League game and we know we can hurt them as well as they can hurt us."

Football: Liverpool stun Barcelona 4-0 in second leg to reach Champions League final with 4-3 aggregate win

LIVERPOOL, England (REUTERS) - Liverpool produced one of the greatest comebacks in Champions League history to beat Barcelona 4-0 on Tuesday (May 7), overturning a three-goal first-leg deficit and advancing to their second successive final with a 4-3 aggregate victory.
Two goals each from stand-in forward Divock Origi and halftime substitute Georginio Wijnaldum left Lionel Messi and Barcelona utterly shell-shocked after a Liverpool performance full of passion, belief and determination.
Juergen Klopp's side will play the winner of Wednesday's other semi-final between Ajax Amsterdam and Tottenham Hotspur, with the Dutch side leading 1-0 from the first leg in London.
"It was overwhelming. I would say it's impossible," said Klopp, amid wild celebrations at the final whistle when his team stood in front of their famous Kop stand to sing You'll Never Walk Alone with fans.
"Playing against the best team in the world. Winning with a clean sheet, I don't know how the boys did it. It's unbelievable," added the German.
"I saw James Milner crying after the game on the pitch. It means so much to all of us. There are more important things in the world but creating this emotional atmosphere together is so special."
Liverpool became only the third team in the history of the European Cup or Champions League to come from three goals down after the first leg of a semi-final and progress after Panathinaikos in 1970-71 and Barcelona themselves in 1985-86.
It was a night that will be remembered by Liverpool fans alongside their fifth European Cup win in Istanbul in 2005, when they came back from 3-0 down at halftime to win on penalties.
For Barca, who went out on away goals to AS Roma in the quarter-finals last year, after winning the first-leg 4-1, it was a bitter occasion that will raise many questions for coach Ernesto Valverde.

MESSI SUBDUED

Messi, whose two goals in the first leg had given his team a seemingly comfortable advantage, was unable to influence the game with an away goal that would have been decisive.
The scoreline was remarkable enough in itself, but the fact that Liverpool overcame five-times European champions Barcelona without two thirds of their usual strike force made it extraordinary.

With inspirational Egyptian Mohamed Salah and key Brazilian forward Roberto Firmino injured, Juergen Klopp had to play Belgian reserve Origi alongside Sadio Mane, with Swiss attacking midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri also given a rare start.
Klopp had said before the game that he wanted his side to "fail in the most beautiful way" if they were to go out of the Champions League Yet the Anfield crowd wanted glory - they roared their team on to the field and greeted Barcelona, especially their former Liverpool players Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho, with boos.
The Liverpool players responded, taking the game to Barca and then grabbing a seventh-minute lead when a poor headed clearance from Jordi Alba fell at the feet of Jordan Henderson, who burst goalwards.
His low shot was parried out by Barca keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen but straight to Origi who slotted home.

QUICKLY-TAKEN CORNER

Barca had openings in the first half but when Messi twice got space around the box he fired wide of the target and when Jordi Alba burst through just before halftime, Liverpool keeper Alisson Becker was out quickly to nullify the danger.
Yet the game took a remarkable turn following the introduction at the break of Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum for injured left back Andy Robertson.
The Dutchman drove home a low cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold, which Barca keeper Ter Stegen should have saved, to make it 2-0 in the 54th minute.
Two minutes later Wijnaldum rose to meet a Shaqiri cross with a powerful header to make it 3-3 on aggregate.
Liverpool then grabbed an extraordinary fourth goal with a quickly-taken corner from Alexander-Arnold, catching the Barca defence asleep with a low ball that was turned in at the near post by Origi.
That sent Anfield wild and meant Klopp's side suddenly needed to switch mindset and defend a lead as Barca slipped, belatedly, into their trademark possession game.
Yet with Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip outstanding in the centre of defence and Brazilian Fabinho making some crucial interventions in midfield, Liverpool held on for one of their most famous wins.
Klopp's side, who lost to Real Madrid in last year's final in Kiev, remain in with a chance of a double triumph as they head into Sunday's final round of Premier League games trailing leaders Manchester City by just a point.
After their defeat in Barcelona, Sunday was expected to be the conclusion of a Liverpool season that promised so much but would ultimately conclude with Klopp's side finishing empty-handed.
Now their campaign has been extended until the June 1 final in Madrid where they will have a chance of a sixth European Cup - which would move them above Barca on the all-time winners list.

LONDON • There have been blips and disappointments before but, for the Manchester City Pep Guardiola would consider his own, the first searching questions have been asked.
Now it is about whether they can cope with expectation, rediscover defensive solidity and also that frisson of excitement in attack.
The pressure on City in the Premier League is finally on.
Defeat by Crystal Palace was not the same as the Champions League quarter-final loss to Liverpool last season when the title was all but sewn up, or the reverse at Manchester United's hands that merely delayed that coronation.
Nor could it be bracketed alongside those upsets in Guardiola's first term when the emphasis was about adjustment and there was the realisation that changes needed to be implemented.
The damage at the Etihad was clear with the straight-talking Fabian Delph describing Saturday's loss as a "massive setback", even if Palace boss Roy Hodgson downplayed the idea that a significant blow had been administered.
The truth lies somewhere in between.

NOT TIME TO PANIC
It's a massive setback but it's a very long season. Most games we are competing against ourselves to do better and the next game will be no different.
FABIAN DELPH, City midfielder, on their mid-season wobble.

This felt significant simply by virtue of the standards the English champions have previously set, and allowing for the relentlessness of leaders Liverpool.
It was also meaningful given that it is now two league defeats in three games in which they have conceded six goals, one fewer than Jurgen Klopp's unbeaten side have leaked all season.
Whether Palace's success, a mix of clinical finishing and defensive nous, shakes City awake or leaves them at a lull, not even Guardiola will know as yet.
That, in itself, will nag at a manager who craves control. As will the reality that the strain they are under is of their making ahead of tomorrow's league trip to Leicester, where a negative result, coupled with a positive one for the Reds could turn the "setback" into a "disaster".
City have injury doubts over Fernandinho, David Silva and Vincent Kompany, with the trio missing the Palace upset and Guardiola might again be forced to play defender John Stones in midfield - which Hodgson's players exploited - at the King Power Stadium.
The return fixture against Klopp's men on Jan 3 looms large and City's aberrations mean it is becoming a game they have to win.
But, before Liverpool, Leicester and the rejuvenated Southampton away on Sunday promise to be testing assignments for a side currently experiencing a wobble.
Proving they are indeed a side for all the seasons - and not just one - is a challenge Guardiola would not have anticipated facing a few weeks ago.

What are the setbacks at my location? SINGAPORE PREMIER LEAGUE

Home United v Young Lions
Bishan Stadium, 5.30pm

They had a taste of blood, and now the Young Lions want more.
Tipped by many to struggle in the Singapore Premier League (SPL) this season, Fandi Ahmad's charges pulled off a massive upset last week when they beat a Hougang United team boasting several senior national players 2-1.
The young guns, lying seventh in the nine-team table, are hoping to build on the victory when they take on sixth-placed and SPL pre-season title hopefuls Home United today at the Bishan Stadium.
Striker Saifullah Akbar, who scored the winning goal against Hougang, said he and many of his teammates benefited from a three-week overseas stint with the national Under-22 team, also coached by Fandi.
Fifteen Young Lions players were among the 24-strong U-22 squad that went on a two-week training camp in Shizuoka, Japan, before playing qualification matches in Mongolia for next year's AFC Under-23 Championship.
Singapore failed to progress to next year's finals after finishing second in their group. They had drawn 1-1 with Hong Kong and North Korea and beaten Mongolia 3-1.
Saifullah, 20, said: "In Japan and Mongolia, we played against opponents who were physically, tactically and technically stronger.
"Doing well on both trips gave us the belief we could match the top SPL teams when we returned here. And that has been key - belief."
Young Lions skipper Joshua Pereira added: "In Japan, we had double training sessions every day, and did not have outside distractions we have back in Singapore like school, work or National Service.
"The win against Hougang felt exceptional, but we know we have to keep our feet on the ground and try to do it again in our next game against Home."
Fandi, 56, refused to get carried away by the win over Hougang - in pre-season, he had simply targeted avoiding the wooden spoon - but added that he was pleased with the competition among his players.
He said: "Everyone wants a place in the team, and everyone's fighting for it.
"The SEA Games (in the Philippines from Nov 30-Dec 11) is the next big target and the players are all eager to prove themselves."
Despite his team's fine form, Fandi said they will start today's match as the underdogs.
Home have kept three straight clean sheets and also defeated Laotian champions Lao Toyota 1-0 in the AFC Cup on Tuesday.
But Home coach Saswadimata Dasuki is fretting over his attack.
Last season's 13-goal forward Shahril Ishak and Australian midfielder Isaka Cernak are sidelined with ankle injuries while South Korean midfielder Song Ui-yong, with 10 goals last campaign, is struggling with a groin problem.
Saswadimata said he was impressed by the Young Lions, noting: "They were very disciplined and very organised, both defensively and going forward.
"They are young, but they compensate by working really hard for each other and being organised.
"We will find it tough to break the Young Lions down."

Sanchez among six on Solskjaer's clear-out list

LONDON • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could discard as many as six players, including Alexis Sanchez, this summer as the Manchester United manager targets a right-back and central defender to build a squad capable of challenging for the Premier League title next season.
The summer window will be the Norwegian's first as the permanent boss and he is willing to sell Sanchez, 30, who has proved a failure with only three league goals since joining from Arsenal in January last year in a swop deal involving Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
The Chile international's salary of £350,000 (S$473,670) a week may prove an obstacle to any potential transfer, though, with the forward's contract running until 2022.
United's broad transfer policy is to bring in three players and sell three each summer, but that number may be doubled in both instances given that the club are some way behind their rivals.
It would represent the biggest turnover of players since 2015, when Louis van Gaal sold six senior players and allowed Tom Cleverley and goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard to leave on free transfers, and bought six full internationals.
Marcos Rojo and Matteo Darmian will be sold.
Antonio Valencia, 33, the club captain, has also been told that his contract, which expires in June, will not be renewed.
Juan Mata and Ander Herrera are also out of contract in the summer and the club are not close to agreeing deals with either player.
Although Herrera, 29, has become a regular under Solskjaer, United are seeking a top-class central midfielder as a regular alongside Paul Pogba, whom the manager rates as key to a credible title challenge next season.
Atletico Madrid's Saul Niguez is among their top targets, with the Spain international, 24, wanting to move to England this summer.
United will not allow goalkeeper David de Gea to leave this summer even though he has 14 months left on his deal and Real Madrid are interested in signing him.
Despite having been in negotiations for 18 months, United are confident that the Spain international, 28, will commit to the club.
They also want to sign a right-back, at least one centre-half, a forward and one or two midfielders, depending on Herrera's decision.
Ideally, Solskjaer would like to buy more British players and develop a home-grown core to his team, just like his former manager Alex Ferguson used to.
Declan Rice, the West Ham midfielder, is on his wish list, as is Callum Hudson-Odoi, the Chelsea forward, who has 14 months left on his contract.
Jadon Sancho, the Borussia Dortmund winger, has also been linked while Aaron Wan-Bissaka, the 21-year-old Crystal Palace and England Under-21 defender, is being considered for the right-back slot.
