Football: Spurs star Kane out until March with ankle injury

LONDON (AFP) - Tottenham striker Harry Kane will be sidelined until March after suffering ankle ligament damage in Sunday's (Jan 13) defeat against Manchester United.
Kane sustained the injury to his left ankle in the closing moments of the 1-0 loss at Wembley and scans have now confirmed the extent of the problem.
It is the third successive season the England captain has missed games due to an ankle injury.
"Following preliminary assessments, we can confirm that Harry Kane has damaged ligaments in his left ankle, sustained during Sunday's match against Manchester United," a statement on Tottenham's website said on Tuesday.
"The striker will continue to be monitored by our medical staff as he commences rehabilitation and is expected to return to training in early March."
Kane was injured after being caught between United defenders Phil Jones and Victor Lindelof while trying to set up a last-minute chance for Tottenham.
He received treatment after the full-time whistle before walking off the pitch clearly in severe discomfort.

Kane's absence is a major blow for Tottenham as they chase the first trophy of manager Mauricio Pochettino's five-year reign.
The 25-year-old is Tottenham's top scorer this season with 20 goals in 31 appearances in all competitions.
He had scored seven times in his last seven matches to keep third-placed Tottenham in with an outside chance in the Premier League title hunt, the north Londoners sitting nine points behind leaders Liverpool.
Kane, who won the Golden Boot as the World Cup's leading marksman last year, also scored the penalty winner against Chelsea in the League Cup semi-final first leg.
Now he will miss the second leg at Chelsea next week, as well as the FA Cup fourth-round trip to Crystal Palace and at least six crucial league games.
The first leg of Tottenham's Champions League last-16 tie at home to Borussia Dortmund will also come too soon for Kane.
He faces a race to be fit for the north London derby against Arsenal on March 2 and the second leg at Dortmund three days later.
England boss Gareth Southgate will hope Kane is back in contention for England's opening Euro 2020 qualifier against the Czech Republic on March 22.
More immediately, with South Korea forward Son Heung-min away on international duty and Brazil winger Lucas Moura also injured, Pochettino is left with Fernando Llorente and Vincent Janssen as his only fit senior forwards.
Speaking before tests confirmed Kane's ligament damage, Pochettino had already admitted he was "worried" about the situation.
Midfielder Moussa Sissoko was also injured against United to further deplete Pochettino's options.
Janssen has endured a wretched time with Tottenham, while Llorente has hardly played either, although he did score a hat-trick in the recent FA Cup third-round win at fourth-tier Tranmere.

Narrow victory for sloppy Lions

Narrow victory for sloppy Lions

FRIENDLY

Singapore 4
Solomon Islands 3
If the main aim of Singapore's international friendly against Solomon Islands last night was to ensure their new coach Tatsuma Yoshida started his tenure with a win, the Lions got the job done.
Barely, though, with a 4-3 win at the National Stadium.
But, if the larger objective was to get the Lions to play possession-based attacking football, Yoshida knows he has a lot of work to do after celebrating his 45th birthday today, as he rated the Lions' performance a "six or seven out of 10".
To be fair, the Japanese tactician was appointed only on May 30 and had just four training sessions.
He said: "It is a good result and a positive start. Our boys played a little nervously, made some mistakes, and we have to improve on some things, but they showed good attitude.

NERVY START
Our boys played a little nervously, made some mistakes, and we have to improve on some things, but they showed good attitude... I'm used to seeing players who train well but become nervous in games.
TATSUMA YOSHIDA, national coach, after his first game in charge of Singapore.

"We couldn't control the play and couldn't stop the opponents' attack in midfield, and we panicked a little. We didn't interchange well and we need to learn to hold our defence first.
"I'm used to seeing players who train well but become nervous in games. These are things we cannot improve on in one or two days but I trust my players."
Singapore, who started off with a 4-1-4-1 formation, got off to a flyer in front of around 1,500 fans when Faris Ramli headed home Shahdan Sulaiman's cross in the fourth minute.
But Singapore strangely sat back after the bright start, as both sides lacked ideas and urgency.
The Solomon Islands looked the likelier team to score towards the end of the half as Izwan Mahbud had to be alert to thwart Joses Nawo twice in two minutes.
The Lions failed to heed the warning signs and were made to pay just three minutes after the restart when Feni Gagame grabbed the equaliser.
Singapore's sloppiness in possession allowed the visitors to score in the 58th and 75th minutes, through Andrew Abba and Benjamin Totori respectively.
But Yoshida's men fought back each time they went behind, equalising twice through Shahdan Sulaiman's free kick in the 68th minute, and Quak's finish off substitute Khairul Amri's pass in the 77th minute.
Singapore captain Hariss Harun, whose sloppy back pass in the 78th minute resulted in Izwan being stretchered off after clashing into Nawo, made amends in the 86th minute by slotting home the winner from point-blank range after Solomon Islands goalkeeper Philip Mango dropped Quak's corner kick.
While the 28-year-old, with 10 international goals, was pleased with how the team fought back, Hariss called for a better showing against Myanmar on Tuesday.
He said: "It is important we got the win. We did it the hard way, which is not ideal. We have to work on controlling the game better. I think it was a case of being comfortable and overconfident after the early goal and we were punished.
"The boys enjoy playing such attacking football but we need to remember our defensive responsibilities too, so tonight was a good lesson we have to learn from."
Solomon Islands coach Wim Rijsbergen said: "We gave a couple of goals away and allowed Singapore back into the game. We have guys who come from very low standards and we have to learn in international football, every mistake can lead to a goal."

Football: Fandi brothers Irfan and Ikhsan score again for BG Pathum and Raufoss respectively

SINGAPORE - The Fandi brothers are proving their fine vein of form is no fluke as both scored midweek for their respective clubs again.
In Raufoss, Norway, Ikhsan Fandi scored his second league goal for Raufoss IL in a 5-2 home defeat by Sandnes Ulf on Thursday (May 16) night.
After coming on as a 55th-minute replacement for Anton Henningsson, Ikhsan scored via a towering header off Mikkel Maigaard's corner in the 89th minute to reduce the arrears to 4-2, but this time there was to be no late comeback.
Just four nights ago on Sunday, Ikhsan had grabbed his first competitive goal for the second-tier Norwegian club in dramatic fashion when he scored a late bicycle-kick winner - coincidentally also in the 89th minute - in the 3-2 away victory at Skeid.
The 20-year-old striker has played in seven league games this season, all as a substitute, and his two goals have come from just 127 minutes of league action.
Despite the defeat, Raufoss are sixth in the 16-team league, and are still within the third-to-sixth playoff places, with the top two guaranteed automatic promotion to the top division.
Ikhsan told The Straits Times: "Yes I'm happy to score again, but we are disappointed not to get any points from this game.

"Scoring in back-to-back games shows I can do well at this level, and I'm just going to keep working hard and try to score as many goals as I can. If I can get more than 10 this season, it will be a very good tally."
Meanwhile in Thailand, Ikhsan's older brother Irfan Fandi grabbed his fourth goal in 13 games across all competitions in BG Pathum United's 3-0 win over Chiangmai in the second round of the League Cup on Wednesday.
The 21-year-old defender scored in the 75th minute and helped his second-tier Thai team to a clean sheet - his seventh of the season - in the victory over their top-division opponents as they progressed to the last 16.
Irfan had also scored in the 4-1 extra time win over Army United in the previous round in April.
With 31 points from 12 games, BG Pathum are top of Thai League 2 and on course for a swift return to the top tier.

Football: We have what it takes to go deep in Asian Cup, says Qatar captain Al-Haydos

(REUTERS) - Qatar have what it takes to register their best Asian Cup performance when the continental showpiece kicks off in the United Arab Emirates this week, captain Hassan Al-Haydos has said.
The tiny, wealthy Arab state will make their 10th appearance in the Asian Cup and will be hoping to improve on their quarter-final appearances of 2000 and 2011.
Comprised largely of players from Al-Duhail and 2018 AFC Champions League semi-finalists Al Sadd, the Maroons are in Group E alongside Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and North Korea - the only side below them in the Fifa rankings.
"I think we can go beyond the quarter-finals in the UAE," Al-Haydos told Qatar's Gulf Times daily on Tuesday (Jan 1). "We have very talented players and an excellent coach who has been with the team for one-and-a-half years.
"On top of that we have a very supportive national federation who are in sync with the team's requirements."
The confidence of Felix Sanchez's men of advancing deep into the tournament has also been boosted by two impressive displays in international friendlies last November when they beat Switzerland 1-0 and five days later earned a 2-2 draw against 2016 European quarter-finalists Iceland.
"There is no pressure on us (because of raised expectations). In fact the recent results have only motivated us," the Al Sadd striker said.

"We are satisfied with our preparations. We hope to continue with our strong performance in the Asian Cup. We feel comfortable, we enjoy the game."
Qatar have also won two more recent warm-up matches against Jordan and Kyrgyzstan before losing narrowly to Algeria and Carlos Queiroz-coached Iran, the top side in the continent.
The Jan 5-Feb 1 tournament will be a platform for Qatar to impress before they host the 2022 World Cup, their first appearance at football's biggest event.
"It's a very important year for us as we are competing in the Asian Cup as well as the Copa America," added Al-Haydos.
"Then we have the World Cup coming up in four years. These tournaments are part of our preparations for the Fifa World Cup."

Football: Real Madrid take top spot from Manchester United in 'money league'

LONDON(AFP) - Real Madrid have knocked Manchester United off the top of Deloitte's Football Money League, but the Premier League still flexed its financial muscle, with all of England's "Big Six" featuring in the top 10 for the first time.
The Deloitte list ranked clubs on how much money they earn from broadcasting, commercial deals and match-day revenues during the 2017-18 season.
United had spent the last two years in first place in the financial charts, but they have slipped to third behind European champions Real and Spanish giants Barcelona.
Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Paris St Germain, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham make up the rest of the top 10.
Dan Jones, the report's author and a partner in the Sports Business Group at Deloitte, said: "European football remains a bull market.
"We have seen Real Madrid shatter records, becoming the first club to break the three-quarters of a billion euro mark and claim a record 12th Money League title in the process."
After winning a third consecutive Champions League title, Real generated a record £674.6 million (S$1.2 billion), giving them the Money League top spot for the 12th time and the first since 2014-15.
All the British clubs were slightly affected by a 3 per cent year-on-year decline in the value of sterling against the euro.
United's fall was influenced by their early exit from the Champions League in the last 16 last season and the remarkable growth in the Spanish duo's commercial income.
While revenues at Old Trafford grew by only 2 per cent, they still earned £590 million last season and the latest forecasts suggest they should surge past £615 million this season.
Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham, the north Londoners making the top 10 for only the second time, all enjoyed healthy increases in their turnover.
Liverpool's run to the Champions League saw their revenue increase by a massive £90.6 million, largely thanks to £222.6 million in broadcast earnings.
While the extended stay at the national stadium is starting to annoy fans, the Wembley effect helped Tottenham increase their matchday revenues by £26.5 million.
Arsenal saw their income fall by nearly £30 million and they dropped from sixth to ninth in the table, a slide that illustrates the importance of Champions League TV money to every big club's bottom line.
Further down the table, Everton and West Ham hold on to their 17th and 20th placings, respectively, but Leicester and Southampton dropped out of the top 20 to 22nd and 23rd.
Newcastle, however, climbed to 19th, giving the Premier League nine teams in the top 20, one fewer than last year.
Taken together, the top 20 clubs, who all come from one of Europe's 'big five' leagues, earned £7.4 billion, up 6 per cent on last year.

Kepa 'should be sacked'

Kepa 'should be sacked'

LONDON • For Chelsea, the mutiny. For Manchester City, the bounty. A humdrum League Cup final won 4-3 on penalties by City after a goal-less finish will be remembered more for the dramatic events late on in extra time.
Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga refused to leave the field when summoned to the bench by his manager Maurizio Sarri, who wanted to bring on Willy Caballero, a known penalty specialist.
It was an unprecedented sight on Sunday, but one that brought swift and unanimous condemnation.
Pundit Chris Sutton lashed out at the Spain international, telling BBC Sport "Kepa should be sacked".
The former Blues forward said: "I've seen players disgruntled before and throw a boot or their shirt down when they're taken off, but players know the rules.
"That should be his last performance in a Chelsea shirt. He's a disgrace, never seen anything like it.
"If I were Sarri, I would walk. You can't be undermined... It's not just Kepa who has disrespected Sarri, it's the Chelsea players."
Chelsea great John Terry felt Kepa's blatant dissent had subverted the Italian's authority.
He told Sky Sports: "Once your number goes up, you have to come off. It's a cloud over Chelsea's display after they played so well."
However, both Kepa and Sarri were on the same page afterwards, with the £71.6 million (S$126.3 million) summer signing issuing a statement on social media.
He tweeted: "At no time has it been my intention to disobey the coach or any of his decisions. The coach thought I was not in a position to play and my intention was to express I was good to continue helping the team. I have full respect for the coach and his authority."
Sarri also portrayed the furore as "a big misunderstanding", insisting: "I understood there was a problem and we needed a change. I understood he had cramp but the problem was not cramp, so he was able to go to penalties."
However, pundits were not buying the official line after Sarri, who had to be restrained by defender Antonio Rudiger, was seen repeatedly gesturing at Kepa to come off before storming down the tunnel.
Former Chelsea midfielder Craig Burley questioned on Twitter if that was the case, then "why Sarri was still trying to kill him just before the pens".
Ex-Chelsea player Ruud Gullit also claimed it was simply "a political answer for the newspapers".
Kepa did go on to save Leroy Sane's spot kick, but should have done better when Sergio Aguero's penalty slipped underneath him.
Chelsea fans were left wondering what could have been, had Caballero, who according to the Mirror has saved 11 out of 38 spot kicks in his career, come on.
City captain Vincent Kompany was relieved his former teammate was not fielded for the shoot-out, saying: "I know how good Caballero is on penalties. Last time, he won it (the 2016 Cup) for us so I didn't want him on."
While Pep Guardiola was "happy to win back-to-back in this competition for the first time in our history", it came at a cost with Fernandinho and Aymeric Laporte out injured for the "next few weeks".

Agree he should be sacked but he won't be. Player power has been a problem at Chelsea for years, all the players have been replaced many times over so it must be in the culture of the place. Won't change as Ambramovich has shown over and over again that the players are more important and have more power than the manager.

"Kepa should never play for Chelsea again. that should be his last performance in a Chelsea shirt. He's a disgrace. I've never seen anything like it. "If I was Sarri I would walk. You cannot be undermined. Why weren't the players dragging Kepa off anyway? "Kepa should be sacked, not Sarri." Related articles

Ole: Alexis can be United asset
LONDON • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes that Manchester United supporters will finally see the best of Alexis Sanchez because of the freedom that he has given his players since the sacking of Jose Mourinho.
The United interim manager confirmed that the forward, who has not played since injuring a hamstring in November, is in line to make his first appearance in today's Premier League trip to Newcastle.
Sanchez has been determined to make a mark under the new manager and it was reported that he urged Solskjaer to pick him for the 4-1 win over Bournemouth on Sunday, even though the club's medical staff had not cleared him for a return to action.
"He's had some great training sessions the last few days," the Norwegian said. "He wanted to (play against Bournemouth) but we have to manage him, he's been out for a month. But he'll be involved against Newcastle.
"He wants to play all the time, he's one of those characters. He made himself available but it was a few days too early for him. He has not had enough fitness but he's looking forward to it."
Sanchez has had a miserable time during his first 12 months at the club. The former Arsenal striker, who earns in excess of £350,000 (S$607,000) per week, has scored only one goal in 10 league games this season.

The 30-year-old became so disheartened with life under the defensive-minded Mourinho that he was considering leaving for Paris Saint-Germain this month, but Solskjaer's arrival has given everyone at United a clean slate.
Paul Pogba has benefited from the attacking philosophy that Solskjaer has installed by scoring four goals in his last two games, and the hope among the club's hierarchy is that Sanchez will also enjoy a renaissance.
"He's a player that would benefit from the interchanging, the rotation, the movement," Solskjaer added. "The more times you get the ball into the final third, the more chances you create, and he'll be an asset."
Given that United have scored 12 goals in three wins in Solskjaer's first three games, it seems unlikely that Sanchez will walk straight back into the side.
He is more likely to start on the bench, with Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard continuing to support Marcus Rashford in attack.

Sanchez will also face competition from Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian, who scored only six goals in 16 league games under Mourinho, netted within two minutes after coming on as a substitute against Bournemouth on Sunday.
Praised for his attacking philosophy so far, former United striker Solskjaer insisted he is only implementing what he learnt for 11 seasons as a player under Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford.
The 77-year-old Scot paid a visit to the players and coaching staff, which includes one of his former assistants Mike Phelan, at United's Carrington training ground on Saturday.
''He enjoyed his time at the training ground, we had a nice few chats and he encouraged us,'' Solskjaer said.
''He knows we are Man United through and through and we want to do whatever we can, as best as we can, up to the last second we are here.''

Aubameyang sets sights on Europa title

LONDON • Arsenal were able to count on a team of superheroes as they overturned a two-goal deficit to reach the quarter-finals of the Europa League, but their next opponents are unlikely to allow them the same luxury of drawing on their powers of recovery.
They were yesterday paired with Napoli in the pick of the ties following the draw, with Unai Emery's team playing at the Emirates in the first leg on April 11 before the return leg in Italy a week later.
The winners of that tie will go on to a semi-final clash against the victors of the all-Spanish meeting between LaLiga teams Valencia and Villarreal. Peter Lim-owned Valencia were on their way out before Goncalo Guedes struck a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser against Krasnodar on Thursday to progress 3-2 on aggregate.
Chelsea, Europa League winners in 2013, will fancy their chances of advancing against Czech side Slavia Prague after smashing Dynamo Kiev 5-0 for an 8-0 aggregate win, while Eintracht Frankfurt will next take on Portuguese outfit Benfica.
While Emery's men have arguably a harder path to the May 29 final in Baku, with Napoli currently second in Serie A, the Spaniard feels pressure brings out the best in his team as "the difficult moments give us our best performance".
Speaking after the 3-0 second-leg win over Rennes during which Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang celebrated his brace with a mask from the film Black Panther, he said: "I'm excited (about) this competition.
"It's exciting not only for the possibility to go to the Champions League, but also because it's a title.
"Today, Inter (Milan), Sevilla are out, a big surprise. The last teams, they're all very important, and it's going to be very difficult. We're going to think the same before every match. The next match is the most important for us."
After Arsenal became only the second Europa League side to come back from 3-1 down after Fulham in 2010, Aubameyang tweeted his delight at the draw, claiming he was looking forward to meeting his friends, Napoli defenders Kevin Malcuit and Faouzi Ghoulam.
He also told reporters the mask "represented him", adding: "In Gabon, we call the national team the Panthers."
