Football: New-look Germany make promising start with Serbia draw

WOLFSBURG, Germany (REUTERS) - Germany's new-look team made a promising return to the international stage with a 1-1 draw against Serbia in a friendly on Wednesday (March 20), showing signs of improvement following a disastrous 2018.
The Germans, knocked out of the World Cup in the group stage and relegated in the Nations League last year, had only one player from their 2014 World Cup victory in the starting line-up and their oldest outfield player was aged 24.
More aggressive and quicker than in recent games, with Kai Havertz, Julian Brandt and Leroy Sane playing behind forward Timo Werner, the hosts needed only three minutes to get a shot on target with Havertz firing the ball at Serbia keeper Marko Dmitrovic following a quick passing move.
Coach Joachim Loew sent world champions Mats Hummels, Jerome Boateng and Thomas Mueller into international retirement in a surprise decision last week as his team prepare to launch their Euro 2020 qualification campaign against the Netherlands on Sunday.
Serbia went forward after 11 minutes and their first corner bounced off the back of two players to land perfectly for Luka Jovic to head in for his first international goal.
The 21-year-old, who has scored 22 goals in 35 appearances for Eintracht Frankfurt this season, is likely to be among the biggest transfer targets this summer, with Real Madrid and Barcelona among clubs reportedly interested.
Werner twice went close to an equaliser before Serbia, who won promotion in the Nations League after an undefeated run in their group, wasted a chance when Adem Ljajic fired a shot over the bar.
But the Germans kept their foot firmly on the gas and wasted several chances in the second half before substitute Leon Goretzka grabbed a deserved equaliser in the 69th minute.
"In the first half the automation in this new team, playing together for the first time, did not function that well," Loew told reporters.
"In the second half the team sent a very good signal that we can increase pressure and we can increase the tempo. We had a lot of chances and we missed the final touch a bit. That is also part of the learning experience.
"Overall, I am very satisfied with the mentality, the pressure we created." Serbia, who had Dmitrovic to thank for hanging on to the draw as the keeper made several saves to deny the Germans a second goal, were left with 10 players when Milan Pavlov was sent off for a reckless challenge on Sane.
The Manchester City winger was taken off but Loew said his injury was not too serious and he would be fit for Sunday.
"It was a vicious foul. Sane was lucky and got away with not getting hurt but such fouls can break bones."

Football: Trophy hunter Guardiola happy to miss out on winter getaway

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Pep Guardiola insisted on Friday (Jan 11) he will be happy if Manchester City have no time for a mid-season break, because it will mean they are still competing for every trophy.
City's rivals Manchester United took the opportunity this week for a warm-weather training trip to Dubai, allowing boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer time to work on his squad's fitness.
Guardiola did take his players to Abu Dhabi last March, after their surprise FA Cup fifth round defeat at Wigan left them with a free week.
The City boss will consider a similar trip this time round if an early FA Cup exit leaves a gap in their match schedule.
But he acknowledges that it may be difficult to fit in such a break if City remain in the hunt for all four major prizes.
"Hopefully not, because that means we continue in the FA Cup and especially in the Champions League. We will see. If not, then we will have this time in summer time," Guardiola told a press conference.
"Last season, it was quite similar. But then after Wigan beat us in the FA Cup, we went there."
City are still in contention for a quadruple of Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup titles, something that has never been achieved in the English game.
They took a significant step towards winning one of those trophies on Wednesday, thrashing third tier Burton Albion 9-0 in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final.
It means that, barring something extraordinary in the second leg on January 23, City will feature in the final at Wembley on Feb 24.
That creates another barrier to a potential winter vacation as their league fixture at Everton, scheduled for the previous day, would have to be rearranged.
"Did you see the schedule this morning? I saw the schedule, and the Everton game will be fixed for another week, so we don't have many (spaces in the schedule for a warm-weather break), so we'll see," Guardiola said.

TITLE RACE

City, having taken a step towards a cup final, resume their attempt to catch leaders Liverpool in the Premier League title race on Monday, when they host Wolves.
Guardiola's side, in second place, are four points behind Liverpool after beating them 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium on Jan 3.
It was Liverpool's first league defeat of the season, and may have increased the pressure on a team trying to become champions of England for the first time since 1990.
But Guardiola rejected the suggestion that he is happier chasing than leading.
"I prefer to be in Liverpool's position," he said.
Guardiola hopes to have Sergio Aguero back for the Wolves match, with the striker having missed City's past two matches because of illness, while Vincent Kompany is close to recovering from a muscle problem.
City have found it tough keeping pace with Liverpool, despite collecting 50 points from 21 games, a better average this season than Barcelona, who are top of La Liga.
Barcelona have collected 40 points from 18 games, an average of 2.22 per match, while City's average of 2.38 is currently only good enough for second place.
"The Premier League is incredibly tough," he said. You don't realise how tough it is until you are here for the amount of games, the weather, the time needed for players to recover."

Pep calls on 12th man in crunch time

Pep calls on 12th man in crunch time

LONDON • Pep Guardiola may just be feeling the heat a little more than usual, if his crankiness at his pre-match press conference yesterday was anything to go by.
His Manchester City side remain in contention for a historic haul of four trophies this season, but winning the one by which the Spaniard's time at the Etihad will be judged depends on overturning a 1-0 Champions League quarter-final, first-leg deficit against Tottenham today.
When asked if he feels that there is increasing pressure on him to win City's maiden Champions League title, Guardiola quipped: "Do I have to win it? The chairman said I have to win the Champions League three times in a row!"
"The Champions League is tough. We fail all the time. Sorry guys, I'm a failure!" he added in an outburst laced with sarcasm.
"In football you lose more than you win. We always try and improve. I try to do my best."
The 48-year-old has also called for City fans to show their support but said that he was curious to what extent they will back his team.
"We need to know our supporters will push us. I want to see tomorrow if the fans want to get to the semi-final," Guardiola said.

A BRIDGE TOO FAR?
The Champions League is tough. We fail all the time. Sorry guys, I'm a failure!
PEP GUARDIOLA, City's Spanish manager, on the 'impossible' targets set by the club's chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak.

LET'S ENJOY OURSELVES
We should not put pressure on ourselves about these situations. There's nothing better than the Champions League quarter-finals at the moment.
SON HEUNG-MIN, Spurs' optimistic South Korean forward, who has deputised ably for the injured Harry Kane.

"We need them in our bad moments, at this stage we cannot go through. I'm really curious to (know) how our fans will be.
"I want the crowd to be like it was against Liverpool (2-1 win in January). I want to see if our fans really want to get to a semi-final. I want to see it tomorrow."
With or without a raucous atmosphere at the Etihad, the good thing for City is that they have won 24 of 26 home matches in all competitions this season.
They have also been an offensive juggernaut, outscoring the opposition 95-15 and netting five or more goal on nine occasions.
City have already lifted the League Cup, have reached the FA Cup final and are locked in a head-to-head battle with Liverpool to retain their Premier League title.
But European glory is a long sought-after goal of the club's big-money Middle Eastern ownership, making this quite possibly their most pressure-packed test.
"It doesn't matter what happens tomorrow, next season we will be there (in the Champions League) again. That is incredible success for ourselves," a defiant Guardiola added.
Tottenham's South Korean forward Son Heung-min is also ready for the big clash and insisted he has already proved he can shoulder the burden of replacing Harry Kane.
Kane is likely to miss the rest of the season after the striker suffered yet another ankle ligament injury in the first leg against City, while midfielder Dele Alli is a doubt after fracturing his hand in the same match.
But Son, who scored the winning goal in the opening leg, has shown this season that playing without Kane need not be fatal to his side's European ambitions.
He has netted nine goals in 10 matches with Kane absent this season and he said: "I just enjoy the football. Everyone, not just me, should enjoy the game and scoring and winning.
"We should not put pressure on ourselves about these situations. There's nothing better than the Champions League quarter-finals at the moment."
In fact, Tottenham have won their last five matches without Kane and Son looks in perfect form to maintain that run at City's expense.
The 26-year-old scored the first goal in Tottenham's new stadium against Crystal Palace. Six days later, he was once again the toast of the 62,062 sell-out crowd as he drew first blood against City.
His rise to prominence is even more impressive given he was so frustrated three years ago that he considered leaving Tottenham.
"Sometimes you have tough times to get better," said Son, who has scored 18 goals in all competitions this term.
"The club, the coaching staff, the players, when I have a tough time they help me lots... I'm really grateful for this situation but I'm not finished."

Football: Paul Pogba grateful to Mourinho for improving him as a person even if 'not everything worked well'

(REUTERS) - Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has thanked Jose Mourinho for helping him "improve as a person" despite the breakdown of their relationship in the last few months leading up to the former manager's sacking on Tuesday (Dec 18).
Mourinho, who replaced Dutchman Louis van Gaal in 2016, won the Europa League and League Cup in his first campaign but his third season was dominated by media reports of a rift with Pogba, while United laboured on the pitch playing dull soccer.
Pogba was stripped of vice-captaincy earlier this season and dropped for the final three league games of Mourinho's tenure, but the France international said that he had no hard feelings towards the Portuguese.
"We won trophies with Jose and I want to thank him for that. Not everything worked well, but (some) things went well," he told the British media.
"He makes me improve, as a person as well, and that's it. That's the past, I want to thank him for that. I'm sure that is the same for all the players."
Pogba was immediately restored to the starting line-up under caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and produced two assists in Saturday's 5-1 English Premier League thrashing of Cardiff City.
"The performance of the team was great and we are happy that the first game of the (new) manager starts like this," he added.

"It's important now to carry on like that. We cannot play like this and win with five goals and then the next game lose."
United, who are sixth in the standings with 29 points after 18 matches, host Huddersfield Town on Wednesday.
