Football: Injured Ronaldo expects to return in one or two weeks

LISBON (REUTERS) - Cristiano Ronaldo does not think the injury which forced him out of Portugal's match against Serbia on Monday (March 25) is overly serious and he told reporters he expects to return to action in one or two weeks.
Ronaldo went off in the first half of the Euro 2020 qualifier with an apparent hamstring injury. The match ended 1-1.
"I'll know more in 24 or 48 hours," he told reporters.
"It happens, it's football. If you go out in the rain you get wet... I'm calm, I'll be back in one or two weeks." His club Juventus later said in a statement that the 34-year-old had undergone exams in Portugal which showed "an apparent minor injury to his right thigh flexors".
"His condition will be monitored and will be subjected to new investigations to define the resumption of competitive activity," it said.
A long absence would be a blow to Juve, who signed Ronaldo last year to boost their chances of winning the Champions League. Juventus travel to face Ajax Amsterdam in their quarter-final first leg on April 10 with the return six days later.
Both Ronaldo and Portugal coach Fernando Santos said the referee had apologised to them for not awarding them a penalty for handball in the second half.

GUIMARAES â€¢ England manager Gareth Southgate was left to rue two shocking defensive errors in extra time which gave the Netherlands a 3-1 win in the Nations League semi-finals, but he refused to put the blame on his players.
Defender John Stones was caught in possession on the edge of the area, which led to Kyle Walker's own goal that saw the Dutch go 2-1 up. He then put Ross Barkley under pressure with a needless short pass that the midfielder misplaced to give away the third to Quincy Promes on Thursday.
"Fatigue has played a part and a lack of match sharpness," said Southgate, who added that his commitment to playing the ball out from the back was not to blame.
"If we didn't play that way, we wouldn't have got to the semi-finals, and we'd never progress to being a top team.
Referring to Matthijs de Ligt giving away a penalty, he said: "The Netherlands also made a huge mistake at the back.
"We didn't lose because of how we wanted to play; we lost because of poor execution and fatigue."
Marcus Rashford's penalty gave England a first-half lead against the run of play, but de Ligt made amends for his error to equalise 17 minutes from time.
England then contributed to their own downfall in extra time with a comedy of errors to hand the Dutch a spot in tomorrow's final against Portugal.
The defeat makes it four losses in their last four semi-final appearances in competitive tournaments, including the 1990 and 2018 World Cups and Euro 1996.
The loss also means England's long wait for a major trophy since the 1966 World Cup goes on.
Southgate, however, insisted his side would learn from their error-strewn performance. Their display showed much work is still to be done if they are to end their trophy drought at Euro 2020, with the semi-finals and final to be played on home soil at Wembley.
"I think it's a really important game for us to reflect on," he said.
"The next few days will be painful, having got to this stage, but we will be stronger for the experience."
The Netherlands failed to qualify for the last two major tournaments. But the young talent that has contributed to a dramatic turnaround in their fortunes was evident, with Barcelona-bound Frenkie de Jong outstanding in midfield.
Said Dutch boss Ronald Koeman: "Most of the people are always looking at what he is doing with the ball, how calm he is but, if you see defensive wise, how many balls he is winning in midfield.
"It looks so easy, but it isn't."
He was not entirely satisfied, saying: "There was a lot of space between their defence and midfield, but we had to do a little bit more on the ball when we were in the final third of the field.
"We had more possession and shots on goal, but the last ball was often too sloppy.
"We don't stop after tonight, there is always something to improve.
"But we are on a good path and the team are happy and confident in the way we play. We have big, big talent in the system."

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says he has been assured by star midfielder Paul Pogba that the Frenchman does not want to leave Manchester United despite mounting speculation over a switch to Real Madrid.
United midfielder Pogba last week described Madrid, managed by France great Zinedine Zidane, as a "dream club for every player" while on international duty.
Fuel was then poured on the fire ahead of Madrid's game at the weekend when the Real boss admitted that Pogba would be welcome at the Bernabeu if and when he decides to call time on his United career.
Zidane is expected to have a big transfer budget this summer to shake things up. Real crashed out of the Champions League to Ajax at the last-16 stage and trail Barcelona by 12 points in LaLiga.
Solskjaer was appointed permanent manager at Old Trafford only last week but the future of United's most high-profile player is once again in the spotlight.
Madrid have a track record of taking some of United's star names, with both David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo swapping Old Trafford for the Bernabeu, but Solskjaer said he is not worried by the Pogba situation.
"It doesn't really concern me because my thought of action was to sit down and speak to Paul," he said on Monday (April 1).
"I have had my chat with Paul and we're fine. He is going to do his utmost here because he knows I am very fond of him as a player and as a person. He is important for us here, so there are no issues. He is happy here."
Solskjaer's immediate priority is United's trip to Wolves on Tuesday for their rearranged Premier League game.
They have a big chance to put pressure on their rivals for a top-four spot by picking up a win at Molineux but know it will not be easy after Wolves knocked them out of the FA Cup last month.
Saturday's 2-1 win at home to Watford moved United level on points with Tottenham and they would go third, at least temporarily, with another victory.
United languished 11 points off the top-four spots when Solskjaer replaced Jose Mourinho in December and the Norwegian is delighted that his team are now in control of their own destiny.
He has set a target of five wins from their remaining seven games and does not feel his players are going to ease up, despite a sub-par performance against Watford.
"I don't think I need to remind the players about their standards dropping," he said. "They know themselves. They want to be in the Champions League and they want to perform as well as they possibly can.
"Maybe they didn't believe in it themselves in November or December but we are in with a chance.
"Everyone knows that if we do our jobs and get 15 points over the last seven games, we will be in the Champions League next year.
"It's the final stretch, so it's not a time to change. We need the same mindset as we have had. It's a question of going into games thinking that we are going to win.
"Against Watford we did not get going until 15 or 20 minutes into the match but I am not worried because we have so many nice games to look forward to between now and the end of the season."

"No, this is the way we play," insisted Tampines head coach Kadir Yahaya, when asked if he considered switching to direct tactics when his team trailed 1-0 just after the hour mark.

The Vietnamese champions began their AFC Cup campaign in style with a 10-0 hammering of Nagaworld but found Tampines a much harder nut to crack.
But Hanoi coach Chu Dinh Nghiem absolved his team of any blame, saying: "I am happy with my players' performance, but I am just a little bit upset that we deserve the three points but didn't win.
"The main reason is the (artificial) field, which is very difficult to play on."

The Belgian notched his first goal in the Champions League with a well-timed volley in the 83rd minute after he had set up forward Son for a 47th minute lead. Substitute Fernando Llorente grabbed their third in the 86th.
That was Son's ninth goal against Dortmund in 11 matches, with the South Korean, who played in the Bundesliga from 2010-15, having also scored twice in the competition's group stage last season.
The Bundesliga leaders, who were eliminated from the German Cup last week, were nowhere to be seen in the second half, with speedy teenager Jadon Sancho given no space to operate after the break. The return leg is on March 5.
Before Wednesday, Tottenham, playing without injured captain Harry Kane and Dele Alli, had never won a home match in the knockout stage of the competition and Lucas Moura came close with a fine shot in the seventh minute.
Dortmund, who were themselves missing injured captain Marco Reus and top striker Paco Alcacer, gradually took control and had the better chances in the first half with Christian Pulisic firing onto keeper Hugo Lloris and the Frenchman saving a point-blank header from Dan-Axel Zagadou.
But the hosts changed the course of the game two minutes after the restart, pouncing on a defensive error and with Vertonghen whipping in a cross for Son to tap in.
Dortmund, who had conceded just two goals in the group stage, tried to recover but found no way past the disciplined Tottenham backline.
Vertonghen then timed his run to perfection in the 83rd to kill off the game and Llorente gave them a big advantage for the second leg.
