EPL players in 24-hour boycott of social media
LONDON • Professional footballers in England and Wales, including leading Premier League players, staged a 24-hour boycott of social media yesterday to protest against racist abuse, both online and from the terraces.
The #Enough online campaign was organised by the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) after a spate of abusive posts to black players, including Manchester United full-back Ashley Young and Watford captain Troy Deeney.
The hate-filled messages came in the wake of racist chants and gestures by Montenegro fans towards Tottenham defender Danny Rose, Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling and Chelsea forward Callum Hudson-Odoi during England's 5-1 Euro 2020 qualifying victory in Podgorica last month.
The PFA is calling for social media companies like Facebook and Twitter to act more quickly over abusive message, and for the footballing authorities to take stronger action on racism.
Backing the campaign, Manchester United defender Chris Smalling said: "Throughout my career, I have developed a thick skin against verbal abuse, justifying it as just 'part of the game'. But the time has come for Twitter, Instagram and Facebook to consider regulating their channels."
Rose, who recently revealed he "could not wait to see the back of football" as he had become so worn down by racism, added: "I don't want any future players to go through what I've been through in my career.
"Collectively, we are simply not willing to stand by while too little is done by football authorities and social media companies to protect players from this disgusting abuse."
Leicester skipper Wes Morgan also claimed that "we came together on Friday to say that more must now be done to eradicate racism from our game", while Deeney felt "the players are speaking out with one voice against racism (to show) that enough is enough".

Football: Palace punish sloppy Arsenal in 3-2 win at the Emirates

(REUTERS) - Crystal Palace put a dent in Arsenal's Champions League qualification hopes after strikers Christian Benteke and Wilfried Zaha made the most of defensive errors in a 3-2 win at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday (April 21).
The visitors took a shock early lead inside 20 minutes when captain Luka Milivojevic's freekick found an unmarked Benteke, who headed it past Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno for his first league goal since April last year.
Arsenal boss Unai Emery responded with the introduction of Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Alex Iwobi at the start of the second half but it was Mesut Ozil who scored the equaliser after a sweeping move.
The German playmaker combined with Iwobi and striker Alexandre Lacazette before scooping the ball past Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita.
But Arsenal paid for a lapse in concentration at the back as Zaha took advantage of Shkodran Mustafi's error in judgement to grab the lead for the visitors, before Palace added a third with a headed goal from James McArthur.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang reduced the deficit for the hosts with his 19th league goal of the campaign to set up a pulsating final 10 minutes but Palace held on to end Arsenal's 16-match unbeaten run at home in the league.
The result ensured Palace's Premier League status for another season as they moved to 12th spot in the standings with 42 points.
"It's nice to get over the 40-point marker and to have safety mathematically confirmed," Palace manager Roy Hodgson said.
"Our defensive shape was fantastic. We remained compact and narrow. We made it difficult to find spaces behind us. I then thought on the counter-attack we were remarkably dangerous." Hodgson was particularly impressed by Benteke's return to the scoresheet after 19 league games and now expects the Belgian striker to finish the season with a flourish.
"Christian Benteke must be very confident after today's performance," the manager added.
"It wasn't the fact he scored and set one up, he worked tirelessly and did a job offensively and defensively. He and Wilfried Zaha will feel they really did a job for the team.
"For Christian who's had a rough time with injuries and not scoring the amount of goals he wants maybe with the final few games he will score a few more." Arsenal remain fourth but fail to take advantage of defeats for Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United earlier this weekend.

LONDON • Tottenham are not making things easy in their quest for a top-four Premier League finish.
On a madcap afternoon yesterday at Bournemouth, they played for 42 minutes with nine men, after seeing Son Heung-min and substitute Juan Foyth sent off, and eventually lost 1-0 to a last-gasp Nathan Ake goal at the Vitality Stadium.
Spurs have now lost seven of their last 11 league games and this was surely not the preparation they had in mind for Wednesday, when they travel to Ajax seeking to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit in the Champions League semi-finals.
Manager Mauricio Pochettino said he has accepted the decision of referee Craig Pawson for the red cards, and blamed his side's defeat on not having any luck.
"Everyone saw the game. I don't need to explain too much. We need to accept the decision of the referee," he said.
"We did not have too much luck. We have to move on. For the first 40 minutes we played so well, creating chances. We did not score, sometimes football is cruel.

  • 2

  • Tottenham are the first team to receive two straight red cards in a Premier League match since Manchester City (versus Chelsea) in December 2016.

"And we conceded in the last minutes. Two red cards made it difficult but we fought.
"Unlucky for us, nothing to say. A mad game that you have to accept.

  • 125

  • Number of seconds Spurs substitute Juan Foyth was on the field from the start of the second half before being sent off for a dangerous tackle on Jack Simpson.

"We are third, we are competing for the top four, we are in the semi-finals of the Champions League. I feel proud about our season.
"What will happen, will happen."
Spurs stayed third, two points clear of Chelsea (68), four ahead of Arsenal and five more than Manchester United, with the top-four race set to go to the final day.
A win would have sealed qualification for next season's Champions League, with their three rivals not in action until today.
Spurs dominated early but found debutant goalkeeper Mark Travers, 19, in inspired form for the hosts as he made a string of fine saves. He is the first teenage goalkeeper to start a Premier League game since Manchester City's Joe Hart in 2006.
Spurs' task was made all the more difficult two minutes before the interval when forward Son was sent off for pushing Jefferson Lerma and half-time substitute Foyth lasted just 125 seconds before seeing red for a lunging tackle on Jack Simpson. Bournemouth struggled to make their numerical advantage count until Ake headed the dramatic winner in the 90th minute.
As it stands, unless results involving Chelsea, Arsenal and United go in their favour today, Spurs may need to beat Everton at home on the final day next Sunday.
The double sending-off also prompted a somewhat cheeky response from pundit Gary Lineker, the former Spurs striker who has never been booked in his career.
He tweeted: "May the Foyth be with you in the dressing room Son."
Match-winner Ake felt that his side had the luck which Tottenham were missing.
"When the opposition has two red cards, you are expected to win. We were sloppy. We didn't create enough, so we are happy we scored in the last minute," he said.

Football: Cardiff relegated from Premier League after Palace defeat

CARDIFF, United Kingdom (AFP) - Cardiff City have been relegated from the Premier League after slumping to a 3-2 defeat against Crystal Palace on Saturday (May 4).
Neil Warnock's side needed a win to have a realistic chance of beating the drop on the last day of the season, but they were out-classed by Palace at the Cardiff City Stadium.
Third bottom Cardiff are four points behind Brighton with only one game remaining, ensuring they will join already relegated Huddersfield and Fulham in the second tier next season.
The Bluebirds will make an immediate return to the Championship after last season's promotion, their fate sealed by a dismal run of nine defeats in their last 11 league games.
It won't be a season fondly remembered by Cardiff, with their relegation coming after the tragic death of striker Emiliano Sala, who died in a plane crash en route to Wales before he had even played a game for the club.
"They've tried hard. We've shown limitations today and that's why we are where we are," Warnock said.
"But the club's arrived again now. It's alive and kicking and that's the main thing. When we first came here it was almost gone.
"I'm really proud of what we've done. It could have been a little bit closer, but things were out of hand."
Warnock's name was chanted by Cardiff fans despite the loss, but it remains to be seen if the 70-year-old returns for the Championship promotion bid next term.
In a painful twist, Cardiff were pushed towards relegation by Palace winger Wilfried Zaha, who spent time on loan with Cardiff when they last dropped out of the Premier League in 2014.
The Ivory Coast international, booed by Cardiff fans, gave an influential display on his return to south Wales and fired Palace in front from the edge of the area in the 28th minute.
Martin Kelly gifted Cardiff a lifeline three minutes later when the Palace defender tried to cut out Leandro Bacuna's cross but instead diverted the ball into his own net when he could have left it for goalkeeper Vicente Guaita to collect.
Kelly's blunder did little to ease Cardiff's obvious anxiety and on-loan Chelsea striker Michy Batshuayi restored Palace's lead when he punished sloppy marking with a clinical close-range finish in the 40th minute.
Andros Townsend effectively confirmed Cardiff's relegation in the 70th minute with a low drive that went in via the woodwork and Bobby Reid's 90th minute curler was no consolation for the beleaguered hosts.

Ready for City aggression

Ready for City aggression

LONDON • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has insisted he is still the right manager to deliver success at Manchester United despite last Sunday's shambolic 4-0 English Premier League defeat at Everton.
United produced their worst display under Solskjaer, who has overseen 25 matches in all competitions, initially as interim manager and then the permanent boss.
The Norwegian subsequently apologised to fans for his players' poor performance.
The loss was a huge blow to United's top-four hopes and left the team in sixth place on 64 points, two behind Arsenal who travel to Wolves today.
United will host rivals Manchester City at the same time and, when asked at a pre-match conference yesterday if he is the best person for United, Solskjaer said: "I would like to say yes, but it's not down to me to say that.
"I'm confident in my team and myself to take this challenge on. It's a big challenge and, when I came in here, I said I'm going to enjoy every single second.
"I don't like losing, but it's a challenge when you go through bad results. This is the way we're gonna do it and plan ahead."
Midfielder Paul Pogba had told Sky Sports that the way United played at Goodison Park was "disrespectful" to themselves, the club and the fans and that the team are looking to give everything on the pitch today.
However, City are on a 10-match winning streak in the league and Solskjaer has warned his men to expect an aggressive battle.
"We got to be ready for their pressing so we've got to defend well, got to be ready for aggression, they will snap at your heels and kick you," the 46-year-old said.
"There will be fouls, absolutely no doubt about it and, when you watch those games, they commit so many players forward.

"They won't allow us easy counter-attacking.
"This is the best game we could ask for with players hurt, as they definitely were.
"We had a meeting after the (Everton) game and all the players were definitely disappointed and really hurt by that performance.
"The City game is the perfect one, there's no hiding place on the pitch and the fans will back you if you give that effort."

Second-placed City, on 86 points, will reclaim top spot from leaders Liverpool (88) with a win today.
James Milner, who has played for three of United's fiercest rivals - Leeds, City and now Liverpool - in the course of a 17-year career, has said he will become a United fan for the first time today.
The 33-year-old explained that he would be delighted if United did Liverpool a favour by winning.
"First time in my life," he said when asked about his support for United this week.
"But I won't be watching. It's a bit of a waste of energy, willing the ball in the other goal."
Liverpool have never won the Premier League title and were last crowned champions of England when they lifted the old First Division trophy back in 1990.
Defender Virgil van Dijk, in his second season with Liverpool, also believes that United will put in a big performance and at the same time aid Liverpool's ambitions.
"United need to do themselves a favour. Everton is not easy to beat at home, but 4-0 is a big loss," the Dutchman said.
"We have no influence on that (the Manchester derby), but United are still playing for Champions League football and they need to get a (good) result."
