Football: Body found in wreckage of plane carrying soccer player Emiliano Sala, investigators say

LONDON (REUTERS) - Air accident investigators said on Monday (Feb 4) they had found the wreckage of the missing aircraft carrying Premier League soccer player Emiliano Sala on the seabed near Guernsey and that a body was visible inside.
The 28-year-old Argentina-born forward had been en route from Nantes in western France with pilot David Ibbotson to make his debut for Welsh team Cardiff City when the plane is believed to have crashed into the sea on Jan 21.
"The object is wreckage from the missing Piper Malibu aircraft," Britain's Air Accidents Investigation Branch said in a statement.
"Tragically, in video footage from the ROV, one occupant is visible amidst the wreckage.
"The AAIB is now considering the next steps, in consultation with the families of the pilot and passenger, and the police."
The wreckage was found on Sunday following a privately-funded underwater search which began after two seat cushions were discovered on the French coast that likely belonged to the aircraft.
The AAIB said it had now concluded it was the missing Piper Malibu aircraft, issuing an underwater image of the crashed plane with part of its registration number - N264DB - clearly visible.

"The image shows the rear left side of the fuselage including part of the aircraft registration," the AAIB said.
"We intend to publish an interim report within one month of the accident occurring."

SINGAPORE PREMIER LEAGUE

Albirex Niigata v Home United
Jurong East Stadium, 5.30pm
Former national defender Noh Rahman got his coaching career in the Singapore Premier League (SPL) off to the best possible start on Wednesday after he guided Home United to an impressive 3-0 win over Geylang International.
But the 38-year-old, who took over the reins on an interim basis from Saswadimata Dasuki last Friday, has not had much time to enjoy his maiden victory.
With a wry smile, he told The Straits Times yesterday: "Being a player and a coach are two very different things.
"As a player, you just have to focus on what you eat, how you train, and to give your best in games.
"As a coach, the minute one game ends, you're already thinking about the next game."
He is expecting a much tougher challenge today against defending champions Albirex Niigata at the Jurong East Stadium.

NO TIME TO REST
As a player, you just have to focus on what you eat, how you train, and to give your best in games. As a coach, the minute one game ends, you're already thinking about the next game.
NOH RAHMAN, Home United's interim head coach, is slowly becoming aware of the huge demands of the job.

The Japanese team went undefeated last season en route to a third straight league championship, but a new league rule this term means Albirex had to sign at least four Singaporean players, with at least two of them starting and playing the entire first half.
Albirex are smarting after a 4-2 defeat by Hougang United on Wednesday, their second loss of the season, and are fourth on 11 points after seven games, one ahead of fifth-placed Home.
Said Noh: "It's a 5.30pm kick-off on a hard (artificial) ground, and it could be hot. We are expecting a tough game."
During a 20-year playing career which he called time on at the end of 2016, he earned 79 international caps as well as a reputation for being one of the most professional local footballers around. Widely respected by his peers, he won two league titles (2001, 2002), two Singapore Cups (2012, 2013) and two AFF Suzuki Cups (2004, 2007).
One of the first things the rookie coach did after his appointment was to consult a group of six senior players. "It was quite a lengthy meeting where we shared quite a lot of things, and I appreciate the players (for) being honest," he said.
Veteran full-back Juma'at Jantan, 35, was one of those involved.
Said Juma'at: "In football, one of the most important things is communication. If we have that, things will fall into place.

"Noh is a no-nonsense type on and off the field and the players, even myself, look up to him. And he is open (to feedback) as well, so I think he is the best choice to lead the team for now."
Juma'at, along with Izzdin Shafiq, Abdil Qaiyyim and South Korean midfielder Song Ui-yong in the squad, were teammates with Noh when he played at the Protectors from 2013 to 2015.
Asked if he felt weird coaching players he once shared a pitch and changing room with, Noh said: "Yes, a little bit. But they are great, they know where the line between a coach and the players is. And I appreciate the fact they understand their roles in the team well."
Home youngster Adam Swandi recalled that Noh was one of the established seniors when he received his first Lions call-up in 2013.
The 23-year-old, who scored against Geylang, said: "Coach Noh has a lot of experience and he is a role model for players like me.
"He has so much to offer our team and Singapore football."
Noh said he has been told by the club that a new head coach would be appointed within six weeks, and is looking forward to returning to his role of assistant coach, which he said was "to assist and learn".
"I'm not shy in saying I feel I am not ready for a head coach job like this," said Noh. "But it's a challenge I am ready to take on."

Jose Mourinho is under a huge amount of pressure this week after the defeat at West Ham left Chelsea 15th in the Premier League after 10 matches. His continued antics off the field have only made

Poor show but Emery backs Mustafi

Poor show but Emery backs Mustafi

LONDON • Unai Emery bizarrely insisted Shkodran Mustafi "has been consistent all season" after his abject display against Crystal Palace ensured the top-four race remained wide open.
The Germany defender was culpable for all three goals as Arsenal were shocked 3-2 in the Premier League at home on Sunday.
It ended their 10-game winning streak at the Emirates Stadium, where they had six clean sheets in seven games in all competitions.
The 27-year-old abandoned marking duties to allow Christian Benteke to nod in his first goal of the season and his first in a year, before switching off to give Wilfried Zaha a free run on goal as he placed his shot past Bernd Leno.
Sandwiched in between was Mesut Ozil's equaliser, but Mustafi was again to blame after losing James McArthur, who headed home from a corner. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang netted the hosts' second goal.
But afterwards, Arsenal boss Emery still felt Mustafi, who started as Sokratis Papastathopoulos was serving out his two-match ban, could "play very well".
The Spaniard said: "We are, every player, helping, playing with a big performance. Against Benteke and Zaha, you can suffer more. If today, we were better in the set pieces, maybe we could win this match."
Palace got their first league win at Arsenal since October 1994, while the Gunners' first home league defeat since the season-opening setback against Manchester City has dented their hopes of reaching the Champions League.
But Emery is still convinced they can finish in the top four, even though their next two games will be testing encounters at Wolves tomorrow and Leicester on Sunday.
He said: "We still have the possibility to achieve our first target... through the league or Europa League.
"In this key moment, we have the chance to fight for the top four. If we win at Wolverhampton, it is still in our hands."
Pundits and fans alike were, however, less optimistic about Arsenal improving their dismal away record, with six of their eight losses coming on the road this season, especially with Mustafi in the team.
Former Gunners defender Martin Keown blasted the schoolboy defending, telling BBC Sport that "his poor decision-making is costing his team". TV personality Piers Morgan was even more scathing, tweeting that he was the "biggest waste of £35 million (S$61.7 million transfer fee paid to Valencia) in world football history".

Emery on Mustafi: Sometimes players don't play well

Unai Emery defended Shkodran Mustafi following the centre-back's mistake during Arsenal's 3-2 defeat to Crystal Palace. The Gunners' top-four hopes were dealt a serious blow after goals from Christian Benteke, Wilfried Zaha and James McArthur sealed a memorable win for the Eagles.

Ryan Fraser wants to come hear, we need a winger, so buy him. No brainer. As for Mustafi he is the very weak link in our very poor defence and has been for some time. There must be a half decent centre back in the Premier League who would jump at the chance for playing for us. Mustafi could always be sold back to Spain where he seemed to do ok.

Football: Liverpool fans in Madrid and Singapore celebrate Reds' Champions League win over Tottenham

Football: Liverpool fans in Madrid and Singapore celebrate Reds' Champions League win over Tottenham

SINGAPORE - They had already spent about $2,000 each for flights and accommodation, and were planning to try their luck with scalpers for the Champions League final tickets in Madrid.
Dinesh Kumar, a 34-year-old Liverpool fan, and his 62-year-old Tottenham-supporting father Dewadas Vellasamy, were willing to pay about $6,000 each but were quoted almost $10,000 each and decided to pass.
Yet the duo, who were part of a group of 20 Singaporeans who had made their way to the Spanish capital last week, still had the time of their lives on Saturday (June 1) with the football festivities that unfolded outside the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium as Liverpool beat Tottenham 2-0 to lift their sixth European Cup.
Dinesh, who works in the oil and gas industry, told The Straits Times: "It was hot and humid and we were surprised the Liverpool fan zone at Plaza Felipe II had no live screening. We were directed to bars, but they were fully booked and the commentary was in Spanish.
"In the end, we found an Indian bistro which was willing to let us to make a booking and watch the game. Fans from Hong Kong, Australia, Egypt, Malaysia, India and England started streaming in.
"There were so many fans like us who did not have tickets, but we ended up having a crazy party.
"At the final whistle, we were in tears because some of us went to Kiev last year when Liverpool lost and this felt like consolation.

"We went to the fan zone again where people gathered and celebrated with song and dance until 6am."
Dewadas, a retiree who has supported Tottenham since 1974, added: "Naturally, we Spurs fans are quite disappointed. I feel Liverpool won by luck because of the penalty and Alisson's saves.
"But I'm also very happy to be part of history with Tottenham's first Champions League final and witness in person what fans are willing to do for the love of their clubs."
Aaron Kok, a Liverpool fan who runs The Experiences Firm that took 11 fans to Madrid, was impressed by the respect both sets of fans showed despite the intense rivalry.
The 42-year-old said: "Spurs fans deserve huge credit. Visibly fewer in numbers, they were still great sport and created insane noise and atmosphere. They were respectful with friendly banter which should be how all sports fans should behave regardless of the team we support."
He and two other Liverpool fans left their hotel at 4am on Sunday to begin a 12-hour commute by plane and car to Merseyside via Rome and London for the trophy parade.
Kok said: "This trip to Liverpool is really quite illogical as there was no guarantee of victory and we could have gone to a very sad city. But life has to be lived through the heart as much as the brain."
Meanwhile, fans in Singapore had various options to follow Saturday's action, including at the Osim Sundown Marathon, where around 300 people gathered to watch the live telecast on a big screen at the runners' village.
After completing the half-marathon in a black Liverpool kit, Eddy Chua, a 22-year-old national serviceman, said: "There was a very lively atmosphere. Even though we were all tired after the run, we kept the atmosphere going.
"I was there alone, but it felt like I was there with friends as we were in it together, cheering for our team when Liverpool scored.
"I supported Liverpool only since 2006 and, from that time on, our only major trophy was the League Cup in 2012. But the Champions League win was our moment to tell the world that this is our time."
Tottenham fan Raama Subramaniyam, a 42-year-old who was also clad in his Spurs jersey, added: "I like the set-up of the live screening, it was well organised and the sound system was good. I just wish I had more friends and Spurs fans around me.
"It was quite a boring game, to be honest. The three-week break after the last Premier League game caused both teams' form to drop and they were both so cautious.
"Spurs attacked in the second half, but didn't convert (their chances), so hard luck to them and congratulations to Liverpool."

HE didn't say in so many words but he proved over two international "A" matches that he deserves a right shot to be the next full-time-appointed Singapore football coach. Football: Arsenal thump BATE to reach Europa League last 16

PARIS (AFP) - Arsenal reached the last 16 of the Europa League by comfortably seeing off BATE Borisov 3-0 on Thursday (Feb 21) and overturning a first-leg deficit that had threatened one of the tournament favourites with elimination.
BATE came into the clash at the Emirates with hopes of an upset after beating Arsenal 1-0 in Belarus last week, but the hosts were level on aggregate after just three minutes when Zakhar Volkov sliced Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's low cross past Denis Scherbitski in his own goal.
Unai Emery's side poured forward and put themselves deservedly ahead in the tie when Shkodran Mustafi thumped home a header six minutes before the break.
Maksim Skavysh missed a good chance to put BATE ahead on away goals when Arsenal failed to clear three minutes after the restart, but another powerful header, this time from Sokratis on the hour mark, put the Gunners into Friday's draw.
Arsenal will be joined by another of the tournament favourites in Napoli after Carlo Ancelotti's team breezed to a 2-0 win over FC Zurich that saw them win 5-1 on aggregate.
Adam Ounas starred on the night for the Serie A outfit after laying on Simone Verdi's 43rd-minute opener before scoring the hosts' second with 15 minutes left.
RB Salzburg, Dinamo Zagreb and Zenit Saint Petersburg all also overturned first-leg deficits, with Austrians Salzburg hammering Club Brugge 4-0 to go through 5-2 and Croatian champions Dinamo 4-2 winners on aggregate after a storming 3-0 victory over Viktoria Plzen.
Zenit, meanwhile, overcame Fenerbahce 3-1 in Russia, Magomed Ozdoev and Sardar Azmoun giving the hosts an aggregate lead before Mehmet Topal put the Turks ahead on away goals just before the break.
However, Azmoun struck again 14 minutes from the end to see Sergei Semak's side through to the last 16.
Pablo Fornals snuck Villarreal past Sporting Lisbon with a fine curling strike that gave the La Liga side a 1-1 draw on the night and a 2-1 win overall.
Scotland's participation in Europe ended on Thursday after 10-man Celtic fell 1-0 at Valencia, already 2-0 up from the first leg in Glasgow and winners in Spain thanks to Kevin Gameiro's 70th-minute strike.
Eintracht Frankfurt swept past Shakhtar Donetsk with a pulsating 4-1 win over the Ukrainians that gave the Bundesliga side a 6-3 aggregate victory.
Sevilla cruised into the next round 3-0 on aggregate on Wednesday after a 2-0 win over Lazio that saw Wissam Ben Yedder score his second goal of the tie after 20 minutes before Pablo Sarabia lashed home Jesus Navas' pass with 12 minutes to play.
Later on Thursday, Maurizio Sarri's Chelsea look to put recent turmoil behind them when they host Malmo with a 2-1 first-leg lead, while inconsistent Inter Milan look to hold their single-goal advantage over Rapid Vienna at the San Siro.

Mauricio Pochettino must deal with several injuries in his squad, as well as Heung-min Son's suspension due to bookings tallying up in previous rounds. In addition, the Amsterdam based club will have had seven days to prepare for the Tuesday's tie, compared to only three in the the North London club's case.

Football: Solskjaer ref rage as Arsenal dent United's top four bid

LONDON (AFP) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer claimed referee Jonathan Moss should be "disappointed" with his decision to give Arsenal a controversial penalty in their 2-0 win over Manchester United on Sunday (March 10).
Solskjaer was furious that Moss ruled Fred's challenge on Alexandre Lacazette was worthy of a spot-kick in the 69th minute.
The United midfielder made only the slightest contact with Lacazette as he lent into the France striker, who immediately tumbled to the turf.
With United already trailing to Granit Xhaka's opener, the decision was a hammer blow as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang slotted home the penalty to effectively seal the three points.
"The referee will be disappointed when he sees it as I don't think it is a penalty," United interim manger Solskjaer complained.
However, Solskjaer refused to condemn United keeper David de Gea after he was left flat-footed by Xhaka's swerving long-range effort.
"David (de Gea) is disappointed every time he concedes a goal. The ball moves so strange and it looks like it goes to David's left and it changed direction," he said.

It was United's first Premier League defeat since Dec 16 at Liverpool in Jose Mourinho's last game in charge.
For Solskjaer, whose side enjoyed a stunning Champions League win at Paris Saint Germain in midweek, this was his first loss in 16 domestic matches since being appointed, ending a club-record run of nine successive away wins.
Solskjaer admitted United's tame opening may have been in part caused by fatigue after their European heroics.
"In the first 15, 20 minutes we were too slow and never put them under pressure," he said.
"Maybe a backlash from Wednesday night, but we created chances and when they get the first goal it becomes a different game.
"We created so many more chances today than when we beat them in the FA Cup. Sometimes it happens, we hit the woodwork twice.
"It has been fantastic so far but today is the lowest we have been because we lost and missed the chance to put pressure on Spurs."
Arsenal move above United into fourth place as the race to qualify for next season's Champions League gathers pace.
The Gunners are two points ahead of United and only one point behind third placed Tottenham, with sixth placed Chelsea three points adrift of the top four with a game in hand.
Arsenal boss Unai Emery was delighted with a statement result that showed his team can hold their own against the league's elite.
"They (United) were in a good moment after one result against PSG but we had a big performance and we are in a good moment in the Premier League," he said.
"To take three points and get a good position for our target is very good and I'm happy for the players.
"Being competitive like today for 90 minutes can give us a stronger mentality."
